    Abstract: A method for implementing on-ring process and off-ring process of RPR ringnet which is compatible with the layer 2 and the layer 3. The on-ring process method comprises that the Ethernet data frames are encapsulated with local mode or remote mode respectively according to whether the source MAC address and the destination MAC address of the Ethernet data frame can be found in the MAC address table of the ring node or in the mapping table of host MAC address and RPR node, and according to whether the destination address of the Ethernet data frame is a unicast address or a non-unicast address.
