Abstract: A sheath can include a sheath body and a sheath hub. The sheath body can have a generally flexible tubular structure, a proximal end, and a distal end. The sheath body can further define a longitudinal axis. The sheath hub can attach to the proximal end of the sheath body and define a longitudinal axis generally aligned with the axis of the sheath body. The sheath body and sheath hub can also form a central cavity along their respective axes. The sheath hub can include two plates: a flexible plate and a rigid plate. The rigid plate can have a relief generally centered on the sheath body's axis. Advantageously, the flexible plate and rigid plate can overlap to substantially seal the central cavity.

Abstract: An access device places a medical article within a body space of a patient. The device has a needle that includes an elongated body, a side fenestration on the elongated body, and a needle hub. The device further includes a dilator disposed on and slideable along the elongated body of the needle and a medical article. The medical article is disposed on and slideable along the dilator. The dilator and the needle form one or more spaces in communication with the side fenestration. At least portions of the dilator and the medical article are configured so as to allow visual determination of the presence of a bodily fluid within the space. The outer surface of the needle and the inner surface of the dilator can include a surfactant. Further, at least one of the needle and dilator can further comprise a vent in communication with the space that allows for the escape of air from the space and inhibits the escape of the bodily fluid from the space.

Abstract: An access device for placing a medical article within a body space includes a needle, a dilator, and a medical article. The needle can include an elongated needle body with a distal end and a hub from which the needle body extends. The elongated needle body can include at least one side fenestration and an outer diameter. The dilator can be slideably disposed on the needle body and include a dilator hub and an elongated dilator shaft that extends from the dilator hub. The dilator shaft can include at least one side fenestration in communication with the needle side fenestration. The dilator shaft can also include an inner diameter that is less than the outer diameter of the needle. The medical article can include a tubular section and a hub. The tubular section can be disposed on the dilator and define a space between the medical article and the dilator in communication with the needle side fenestration through the dilator side fenestration. At a least portion of the medical article can be configured to allow visual determination of the presence of a body fluid within the space.

Abstract: In some embodiments of the invention, an access device can be provided. Advantageously, the access device can enhance the detection of the device's access into a desired body space. For example, the access device may have portions with enhanced visibility to a naked human eye, or an imaging device such as a medical imaging device. Where an imaging device is used, the imaging device can image the access device in a space that usually would not be visible to an operator, such as within a medical patient's body. Where the access device is directly viewed by a human eye, the access device can provide some form of feedback that allows an operator to more quickly discern if the access device has entered a desired space. For example, if the access device is to enter a blood-filled body space, the access device can allow blood to flow up and into the device, and the device can make the blood's presence more immediately apparent. One method of making the blood's (or another fluid) presence more immediately apparent is using a portion with contrasting optical properties.

Abstract: An access device places a medical article within a body space of a patient. The device has a needle that includes an elongated body and a needle hub. The medical article is disposed over and slideable over the needle. A flash space is provided anywhere between the needle and the outer surface of the medical article. The flash space communicates with a bore of the needle, as well as a variable volume chamber. The variable volume chamber can then draw fluid from the flash space into the chamber.

The device further includes a dilator (24) disposed on and slideable along the elongated body of the needle and a medical article (26). The medical article is disposed on and slideable along the dilator. The dilator and the needle form one or more spaces (150) in communication with the side fenestration (56).

Abstract: An anchoring system 10 secures a catheter 8 to the body of a patient and arrests axial movement of the catheter 8 without meaningfully impairing fluid flow through the catheter 8. The anchoring system 10 includes an anchor pad 12 that adheres to the patient's skin and supports a retainer 20. The retainer 20 includes interengaging structure that moves the retainer 20 between an open and a closed position. When in the open position, the retainer 20 can receive a portion of the catheter 8 and be subsequently moved to the closed position. Advantageously, the interengaging structure allows the retainer 20 to receive catheters 8 of various sizes. In some embodiments the interengaging structure includes a latch mechanism 80 having an angled opening 104 and a strap 24. The angled opening 104 is configured to receive the strap 24 when the retainer 20 is in the closed position. The retainer 20 may further include one or more retention mechanisms to further inhibit axial movement of the catheter 8 relative to the retainer 20 when the catheter 8 is secured therein. In an embodiment, the anchoring system 10 includes a mount that allows the retainer 20 to rotate relative to the anchor pad 12.

Abstract: An anchoring system includes a device which permits a portion of a catheter or similar medical article to be easily anchored to a patient, desirably without the use of tape or needles and suture. The anchoring system comprises an anchor pad and a retainer mounted upon the anchor pad. The retainer includes at least one clip forming at least a portion of a central channel and that moves generally in a lateral direction to capture the medical article to be retained. In certain embodiments, the clip moves in lateral and transverse directions between closed and open positions. The medical article is secured within the central channel. The channel may have a straight or tapering shape depending on the medical article to be retained.

Abstract: A catheter securement device (100) holds a medical article such as a catheter hub or a connector fitting in position upon the body of a patient and at least inhibits longitudinal movement of the medical article. The securement device (100) includes a retainer (120) and at least one anchor pad (110). The retainer (120) has one or more curved ribs (280) into which at least a portion of the medical article is inserted. The retainer (120) includes a spine (145) that extends in a proximal direction from the retainer (120). The spine (145) includes a clip (147) having an abutment surface that can abut against a contact point or surface on the medical article. The abutment, in conjunction with a second abutment and/or a tapering shape of the retainer (120), inhibits longitudinal movement of the medical article in both proximal and distal directions.
