    Abstract: A composite material comprising a metallic substrate and a coating on at least one side of the metallic substrate, wherein the coating comprises an acrylic or styrene-acrylic based polymer and is less than 0.00508 mm (0.2 mils) thick, wherein the polymer has a molecular weight of 50,000 to 1,000,000, a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 50-80oC, and comprises 90-100 wt. % of the total solids in the coating. The method of applying a coating to a metal substrate using a manifold flood and squeegee roll configuration or alternatively roll coater techniques; wherein the roll hardness, shape, pressure and speed are chosen to ensure that the coating composition forms a continuous wet film on the metallic substrate surfaces when the strip travels at up to 600 feet per minute; and the wet film has a uniform thickness of 0.0508 mm (2 mil (0.002 inch)) or less.

    Abstract: A"faux stainless steel" may be produced by processing galvanized carbon steel through a temper mill using textured rolls to develop a "polished" type surface. The galvanized coating is not removed by abrasion but is compressed thereby providing a more uniform substrate than conventional polishing or brushing. The resulting strip may then be coated with an organic film to provide additional appearance and corrosion benefits including anti-fingerprint resistance.

    Abstract: A process involves the continuous surface treatment of stainless steel coils with aqueous suspensions of rare earth oxide nano or micro particles or aqueous rare earth nitrate solutions of nano or micro particles. The surface treatment can be applied by roll coating, spraying or other conventional application techniques. The treated material in coil form is then heated in an annealing box using an open coil process whereby a wire is placed between coil laps to promote uniform atmosphere exposure. The atmosphere can be reducing or oxidizing and the times can vary from 1 hr to 100 hr. The atmosphere can also be wet (high dew point) or dry (low dew point). The surface treatment promotes a more uniform color to the subsequently developed oxide formed during anneal-type heat treatment. It also improves corrosion resistance of the processed stainless steel material. Materials treated in this manner are suitable for a variety of applications in the building systems, automotive and appliance markets.
