Abstract:
A drilling assembly is disclosed that in one embodiment includes a bidirectional wireless data transfer device between a rotating and a non-rotating member of the drilling assembly. Power may be supplied to the rotating member via any suitable method, including an inductive device and direct electrical connections.
Abstract:
A method and assembly provides tension to a transmission line in a pipe. The method includes inserting a transmission line into a transmission line channel of a pipe. The transmission line has a first end and a second end, the transmission line being inserted into a first end of the pipe second-end-first. The transmission line has a first tension-loadsupporting mechanism attached to the first end of the transmission line. The method includes applying a first level of tension to the transmission line in the pipe and applying a second tension-load-supporting mechanism to the second end of the transmission line while the first level of tension is applied to the transmission line. The method further includes removing the first level of tension from the transmission line to maintain a second level of tension along the transmission line between the first and second tension-load-supporting mechanisms.
Abstract:
A wellbore is formed by using an apparatus that may include a shaft having an end portion, a drill bit body tiltable about the end portion, and at least one actuator configured to apply a tilting force to the drill bit body.
Abstract:
A downhole tool starts recording seismic energy. During the recording time, a surface seismic source is activated a specified number of times with a nominally defined separation between successive. The downhole sensor receives seismic waves resulting from the activation, but the time of the shooting sequence is not known downhole. The recorded data stream is processed and converted in real-time into seismic traces. A predefined number of traces are stacked and the quality of this sliding stack is used to detect time of the shooting sequence. The method could be used to detect one or several shooting sequences during a measurement window.
Abstract:
A method, apparatus and computer-readable medium for reducing a vibration of a drill string in a borehole. A sensor of the drill string obtains one or more measurements of a parameter of the vibration. A processor determines at least one force for controlling the measured vibration from the measured parameter. At least one actuator applies the determined at least one force against the borehole wall to control the vibration of the drill string.
Abstract:
An apparatus to be conveyed into a wellbore is provided, wherein the apparatus includes a housing configured to be conveyed downhole and a drive member located in the housing. The apparatus further includes a drive unit configured to actuate movement of the drive member by selectively coupling to the drive member, wherein the coupling of the device to the drive member is controlled by applying an energy to a selected material in the device.

Abstract:
An apparatus for measuring strain on a downhole component includes: at least one strain sensitive device disposed proximate to a surface of a component of a drilling assembly or disposed within a material forming the component; and a processor in operable communication with the at least one strain sensitive device, the processor configured to detect changes in the at least one strain sensitive device and detect at least one of erosion, crack formation and crack propagation in the component surface. An apparatus for measuring strain on a downhole component includes: at least one strain gauge deposited on a surface of a drive shaft or disposed within a material forming the drive shaft; and a processor in operable communication with the at least one strain gauge, the processor configured to detect changes in the at least one strain gauge and detect conditions affecting operation of the drive shaft.
Abstract:
A directional drilling apparatus include a first cutter that substantially cuts a wellbore bottom along a first axis and a second cutter that cuts the wellbore bottom along a second axis different from the first axis. The second cutter may extend an adjustable amount out of the first cutter. In another embodiment, a pilot string may connect the second cutter to the first cutter.
Abstract:
An apparatus for use in a wellbore is provided, which in one embodiment includes a drilling motor and a steering unit placed about a shaft between a lower section of a stator in the motor and a drill bit. The steering unit includes a substantially non-rotating member and a force application member on the non-rotating member configured to radially extend the force application member from the non-rotating member. In another embodiment, the steering unit may include, rotating member configured to rotate a drill bit, a steering member configured to orient the drill bit along a selected direction, a first steering device configured to orient the steering member in the wellbore, and a second steering device configured to maintain orientation of the steering member when drilling the wellbore.
