Abstract:
Disclosed is a method and a system of processing a metal casting, particularly a cylinder-block, comprising following steps: - pouring a molten metal into a mold to form a casting; - removing at least a portion of the mold; - transferring the casting on a conveyance mechanism comprising: * a plurality of roller bars arranged transverse to an intended direction of travel of the casting; * at least one hollow guide tube extending perpendicular to the roller bars, the at least one guide tube releasably engaging the casting; * the guide tube comprises a plurality of apertures extending from the bore of the hollow guide tube; * a source of pressurized air in communication with the bore of the hollow guide tube. - heat treating the casting.
Abstract:
A system and method for heat treating castings and removing sand cores therefrom. The castings are initially located in indexed positions with their x, y, and z coordinates known. The castings are passed through a heat treatment station typically having a series of nozzles mounted in preset positions corresponding to the known indexed positions of the castings passing through the heat treatment station. The nozzles apply fluid to the castings for heat treating the castings and degrading the sand cores for removal from the castings.
Abstract:
A furnace for heat treating a workpiece is provided, comprising at least one high pressure heating zone including at least one fluid impingement device capable of directing a heated fluid medium at a workpiece within the furnace, wherein the fluid impingement device is less than about 6 inches from the workpiece and/or is capable of directing the heated fluid medium at the workpiece at least 4,000 feet per minute. The furnace may further comprise a rotating mechanism for rotating the workpiece, a gripping mechanism for inverting the workpiece, and/or a soak zone including an air recirculation system downstream from the high pressure heating zone. The system may further comprise a process control temperature station and/or a sand reclamation system.
Abstract:
Disclosed is both a process and apparatus for forming a molded article. The molded article is formed in a vertically potted flaskless mold. The flaskless mold is closed having an opening in the top portion that receives a chill for directing the cooling of the molten metal introduced into the mold cavity. After the molten metal solidifies and before the mold is broken down, the chill is removed for reuse in the process.
Abstract:
A system and method for forming and heat treating metal castings is provided with a vertical heat treatment unit positioned adjacent and downstream from a pouring station at which a series of molds are filled with a molten metal to form the castings. The vertical heat treatment unit includes a vertically oriented furnace chamber in which the castings are received, and which has a reduced footprint to reduce the manufacturing floor space required for the vertical heat treatment unit, and to enable the vertical heat treatment unit to be positioned in close proximity to the pouring station.
Abstract:
A method and system for generating a production sequence for the control of resources and production for metal castings of a manufacturing plant. The system employs a transport system to transfer the castings between a series of processing stations, which could include heat treatment, quenching, decoring, demolding, cleaning, machining, inspection, storage, etc., served by the transport system. A series of guided vehicles moving along the transport carry the castings between the processing stations. Each guided vehicle includes an identifier monitored by a controller to direct the castings to the next required processing station according to a predetermined production sequence for the castings thereon.
Abstract:
A method of producing a metal casting comprising : pouring a molten metal material into a mold to form a casting having a core aperture ; removing the casting from the mold ; clearing the core aperture of the casting ; and heat treating the casting.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a method for dislodging a mold from a casting formed within the mold. The mold may be removed from the casting by scoring the mold and applying a force sufficient to cause the mold to fracture and break into pieces. Additionally, the mold may be fractured by either explosive charges placed in the mold pack or by high energy pulsations directed at the mold. Once the mold is fractured and broken into various pieces it may then be dislodged from the casting.
