Abstract:
In accordance with certain embodiments, illumination elements having different shapes defined by contiguous arrangements of illumination unit cells may be assembled to illuminate an arbitrary two-dimensional area. In various embodiments, the illumination elements include flexible light sheets and one or more sealed regions containing light-emitting elements, the sealed regions defined by seals between a top housing and a bottom housing and/or the light sheet.
Abstract:
In accordance with certain embodiments, lighting systems feature lightsheets including multiple illumination units or modules electrically interconnected such that unremoved illumination units or modules remain energized upon removal of at least a portion of one or more illumination units or modules.
Abstract:
In accordance with certain embodiments, lighting systems include one or more lightsheets each including a plurality of strings of light-emitting elements, control elements, and power conductors for supplying power to the light-emitting elements and control elements.
Abstract:
In accordance with various embodiments, planar light sheets are conformed to interior volumes of housings to produce predetermined spatial optical characteristics such as luminous intensity distributions. Embodiments of the present invention relate to illumination systems based on flexible light sheets and that incorporate additional functionality that enables various different mechanical mounting and electrical and/or mechanical joining techniques. For example, illumination systems in accordance with embodiments of the invention incorporate rigid, semirigid, flexible, and/or positionable housings that at least partially enclose flexible light sheets and that may also provide electrical connectivity.
Abstract:
In accordance with certain embodiments, lighting systems include flexible light sheets having light-emitting elements with first luminous intensity distributions disposed thereover, and the light sheets are curved or folded to produce a second luminous intensity distribution different from the first luminous intensity distribution.
Abstract:
In accordance with one embodiment, a lighting system includes a plurality of light-emitting strings, a plurality of control elements, a plurality of conductive traces, at least a portion of a first power conductor, and at least a portion of a second power conductor within a sealed region between a top polymeric housing and a substantially planar flexible substrate, and one or more conductive couplings extending from within the sealed region to outside of the sealed region.
Abstract:
In accordance with certain embodiments, illumination systems include a flexible light sheet that may be wound within and unwound from, or folded within and unfolded from, a storage unit having a power source for powering light-emitting elements on the light sheet.
Abstract:
In accordance with certain embodiments, an electric device includes a flexible substrate having first and second conductive traces on a first surface thereof and separated by a gap therebetween, an electronic component spanning the gap, and a stiffener configured to substantially prevent flexing of the substrate proximate the gap during flexing of the substrate.
