    Abstract: Embodiments of a deadfront article for a display are disclosed herein. The deadfront article includes a cover structure having: an inner surface; an outer surface opposite the inner surface; a glass layer located between the inner surface and the outer surface; and a first layer of light transmitting ink or pigment located between the inner surface of the cover structure and the glass layer. The deadfront article also includes a light guide layer having: an inner surface; and an outer surface facing toward the inner surface of the cover structure. A light extraction layer located on at least one of the inner surface and the outer surface of the light guide layer.

    Abstract: Glass articles and glass light guide plates are disclosed that can be used in a backlight unit suitable for use as an illuminator for liquid crystal display devices. The glass article comprises a glass sheet including a first major surface comprising a plurality of channels or elongate microstructures, which can be separated by a non-zero spacing, the glass sheet further comprising a second major surface opposite the first major surface, and at least one of the first major surface and the second major surface comprising light extraction features formed therein. The glass article can be a light guide plate part of a backlight unit including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in an array along at least one edge surface of the glass sheet.

    Abstract: A backlight unit is provided for a liquid crystal display (LCD) unit in a display device. The backlight unit includes a light guide plate (LGP) and a first light source. The light guide plate has two major surfaces and a first side wall surface between the two major surfaces. The first light source is contact with or in proximity to the first wall surface of the light guide plate and optically coupled with the light guide plate. The light guide plate has a dimension such as length greater than a dimension such as length for the LCD unit. The first light source has a dimension such as length equal to or greater than the dimension such as length for the LCD unit.

    Abstract: Backlight units include a light guide plate having an array of unit zones, and an array of light sources positioned proximate the light guide plate. At least one light source is optically coupled to at least one corresponding unit zone in the array of unit zones, the at least one light source comprising a first emission edge or a first dominant emission direction positioned at an angle relative to a horizontal axis of the corresponding unit zone.
