Abstract: Fire-retardant composites, methods of making fire-retardant composites, and use thereof are described. A fire-retardant composite can include at least two fire-retardant laminates, and a porous thermoplastic core material disposed between the at least two fire- retardant laminates. Each laminate can have one or more ply, each of the plies can include a plurality of fibers in a thermoplastic polymer matrix that includes a fire-retardant composition. The fire-retardant composite meets European fire-retardant standards for rail transportation.

Abstract: Unidirectional fiber tapes include a matrix material including a thermoplastic material and a plurality of fibers dispersed within the matrix material, wherein the tape has a thickness that is between 0.07 mm and 0.30 mm. The tapes have a mean relative fiber area coverage of from 65 to 90 and a coefficient of variance of from 3 to 20. In the tapes, the fibers comprise carbon fibers, and the tape has a fiber volume fraction that is greater than 50%.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are processes, apparatuses, and systems for converting solar energy. One apparatus includes a housing formed from a polymer composition, the housing comprising: a wall disposed about a periphery of at least a portion of a recessed surface having an interior side and an exterior side; a first sliding surface disposed internal to the wall and extending from the interior side of the recessed surface; and a second sliding surface disposed internal to the wall and extending from the interior side of the recessed surface; and a plurality of absorbers disposed internal to the wall of the housing and slideably disposed on at least one of the first sliding surface and the second sliding surface, wherein each of the absorbers is configured to allow passage of a fluid therethrough to heat the fluid.
