Methods, apparatus, compositions for reinforcing bone structures are disclosed as well as a reinforced bone structure itself. By injecting a low viscosity polymeric solution into a trabecular bone region at least partly surrounded by cortical bone allowing it to cross-link in-situ, a non-degradable gel can effectively reinforce the region by retaining fluid in the constrained space within the cortical shell. Due to the low viscosity of the pre-cross-linked aqueous polymeric solution, the entire site could be filled effectively and consistently. Additionally, by injecting a low viscosity pre-cursor, the solution fills the natural intra-trabecular spaces without substantial alteration of the trabecular structure at the site.

The present invention relates generally to adhesive delivery devices, systems and methods. In particular, the present invention provides a transcutaneous adhesive delivery device which provides simplified injectable fixation and repair of tissues especially bone tissue. Numerous devices have been used to repair bone fractures. Plates, pins and screws along with other implantable devices are common devices used in the repair of bone fractures. Plates and reinforcing mechanical fixtures are provided in various types, and are used in combination with pins, screws and other attachment means to repair bone tissue. These mechanical devices are used to mechanically fixate the bone tissue to provide stabilization and fixation to improve the healing process. Many of the mechanical bone fixation devices and methods are dependent on technique and can result in inadequate attachment, excessive time to install, undesirable long term effects of permanent implants such as infection, rejection, scarring and pain. These mechanical fixation devices also require surgery to implant. There is therefore a need for improved bone repair fixation devices, materials, systems and methods.

The present invention involves the fabrication and use of biocompatible polymers that are injected percutaneously into the inner portion of a defective region of a spinal disc and swell or expand or subsequently cure in situ to form a disc nucleus prosthesis. The polymers may be synthetic or natural (e.g., collagen), and may be provided in forms including, but not limited to hydrogels, compressible foams, cords, balloons, etc. Subsequent to injection into a target space or void within the disc, one or more cell binding agents, growth factors, and/or drugs on or within the cured polymer then interact with the remaining portion of the disc to support tissue ingrowth and to achieve a higher probability of biological mimicking.

The present invention relates in certain embodiments to medical devices for treating osteoplasty procedures such as vertebral compression fractures. More particularly, embodiments of the invention relate to instruments and methods for controllably restoring vertebral body height by controlling the geometry of fill material introduced into cancellous bone. A system 100 utilizes Rf energy in combination a conductive bone fill material 120 for polymerizing the surface of the inflow plume 165 to control the geometry of the fill material 120 and the application of force caused by inflows of fill material 120. In another embodiment, the method of treating bone includes injecting a volume of fill material 120 into a bone and selectively modifying a viscosity of a selected portion of the bone fill material 120 to control the direction of flow of the fill material 120 within the bone 90. The method can also include controlling at least one flow parameter of the flow of bone fill material 120. A system 100 for treating bone using this method includes an introducer 110A, 110B for delivering fill material 120 into the bone 90 and an energy source 125A selectively coupleable to the fill material 120 to alter the viscosity of the fill material 120 as it flows out of the introducer 110A, 110B.

A subcutaneously formed in place orthopedic fixation device is provided, such as for fixation of the spine or other bone or bones. The device comprises an inflatable member, such as a tubular balloon. A heat source is provided in thermal communication with the interior of the balloon. The balloon is positioned at a treatment site while in a flexible, low crossing profile configuration. The balloon is thereafter inflated with a hardenable media, and heated to accelerate hardening of the media. Methods and delivery structures are also disclosed.
