Abstract:
Methods, compositions, kits, and drug delivery devices are provided for treating, adhering, or sealing biological tissues. The methods include combining a first solution that includes an oligomer/polymer component and a second solution that includes a dendrimer component, and at least one of the oligomer/polymer component and dendrimer component includes at least one substituent that is capable of photoreversible dimerization. The reversible dimerization of the substituent may allow for the reversible dimerization and/or polymerization of one or more components. The substituent that is capable of photoreversible dimerization may be active by the application of light, such as UV light.
Abstract:
Film forming gel compositions, useful in creating conformable and flexible gel bandages, can be formulate from a film-forming polymer, a tackifier, and a volatile solvent. The film forming gels can also include antiseptics, cationic polymer coagulants, fillers, and other additives. The gel compositions form relatively thick films when dried on tissue, and can exhibit enhanced breathability to promote wound healing.
Abstract:
An adhesive for moist tissue is formulated including a silicone elastomer, a crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymer and a sodium polyacrylate based superabsorbent polymer. The adhesive adheres well to moist tissue, such as a mucosal skin surface. An ostomy skin barrier including a stoma seal made using the adhesive is also disclosed.
Abstract:
Hydrogel compositions and methods of forming and using the hydrogel compositions are disclosed. Exemplary hydrogel compositions are biocompatible and can be used for various applications, including vitreous substitutes, adhesives, and drug delivery compositions. Further, exemplary hydrogel compositions have desirable properties, such as clarity, refractive index, viscosity and elastic modulus that are the same as or similar to the same properties of a healthy vitreous in an eye.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a composition including a polymer and a switch initiator. The composition can be switched from a first liquid state to a second adhesive state by activation of the switch initiator. The composition has in the first liquid state a complex viscosity |η*| below 0.4 MPa s; and the composition has in the second adhesive state a second repeated peel force above 1 N/25mm.
Abstract:
Disclosed are methods, apparatus, and systems useful for detecting leaks in pleural tissue. Also disclosed are methods of detecting and sealing such leaks. Indicator dye or stain is aerosolized and delivered to the lung via anesthetic equipment, oxygen tube, endoscope, or other suitable equipment, the dye is allowed to travel through the lung along the path or paths of least resistance emerging at the surface of the lung, staining the tissue indicative of a leak. Some embodiments include introducing one part of a two part sealant with the dye, and applying the second part of the sealant to the stain identified leak locations.
Abstract:
The invention provides sealants wherein biodegradable hydrogels that do not otherwise comprise protein-reactive groups for binding to membranes or tissue are provided said groups optionally through a linker. The linker may be biodegradable and may be biodegradable by an elimination reaction. The invention also provides multilayer gels for drug delivery wherein a porous gel in contact with a tissue or organ to which the drug is to be delivered is protected by a microporous layer from the surrounding bodily fluid.
