The blade includes a solid body, a longitudinal portion having a proximal end configured to couple to an ultrasonic transmission waveguide and a transverse portion extending crosswise from the distal end of the longitudinal portion. At least one dissection edge and at least one hemostasis surface is provided on the blade. The transverse portion defines a hook having a free end configured to pull and dissect tissue. Also disclosed is an ultrasonic surgical blade that also includes a sharp central ridge and an end mass for acoustic balance.

An apparatus comprises a body assembly and a shaft extending distally therefrom. The shaft defines a longitudinal axis. The apparatus further comprises an acoustic waveguide and an articulation section coupled with the shaft. A portion of the articulation section encompasses a flexible portion of the waveguide. The articulation section further comprises first member and a second member that is longitudinally translatable relative to the first member. The apparatus further comprises an end effector including an ultrasonic blade in acoustic communication with the waveguide. A distal portion the ultrasonic blade is disposed in a first direction away from the longitudinal axis at a bend angle. The end effector also includes a clamp arm that is coupled with the first member and the second member, and an articulation drive assembly operable to drive articulation of the articulation section to thereby deflect the end effector from the longitudinal axis in the first direction.

A method is disclosed for treating an ultrasonic end effector or surgical blade. The method includes providing an ultrasonic end effector or surgical blade and inducing a residual compressive stress along at least one surface of the ultrasonic end effector or surgical blade. The residual compressive stress may be induced by peening the at least one surface. Such treatment improves the resistance of the ultrasonic end effector or surgical blade to fracture propagation and improves the fatigue life of the ultrasonic end effector or surgical blade. Ultrasonic surgical instruments comprising an ultrasonic end effector or surgical blade treated according to the method are also disclosed.

A material for use in a medical device includes a blend of a non-melt polymer such as Polyamideimide, a meltable carrier polymer such as Polyetherketoneketone and lubricants/rheology modifiers such that the final polymer material can be extruded, pelletized and used to injection mold components for the medical device. The ratios of the Polyamideimide, Polyetherketoneketone and the lubricants are selected to provide sufficient lubricity and glass transition temperature to the material to make it appropriate for use in high temperature applications and additive manufacturing processes.
