Abstract: An implantable device for treating disc degenerative disease and artliritis of the spine. The implant is sized for placement into an intravertebral disc space. The implant has a body with a predetermined, defined, repeating, three-dimensional pattern at least partially on at least one of its surfaces. The pattern is adapted to create a surface area of bone-contacting features that enhance in-growth and biological attachment to a biocompatible material. Also disclosed are process steps for making the implant.

Abstract: An apparatus for replacing a damaged spinal disc in a spinal column includes a first retaining device having an outer surface engageable with a first vertebra of the spinal column and an inner surface. A second retaining device has an outer surface engageable with a second vertebra of the spinal column and an inner surface. A resilient core has a first surface and a second surface. The first surface engages the inner surface of the first retaining device. The second surface engages the inner surface of the second retaining device. The resilient core has a tapered radially outer surface extending from adjacent the first surface to adjacent the second surface. The first retaining device may have a flange extending toward the second retaining device. A concave surface may extend between thefirst surface and the radially outer surface.

Abstract: An anterior cervical column support having a hollow frame having a top load bearing surface and a bottom load bearing surface may be inserted between a first spinal vertebra and a second spinal vertebra. The top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface may each include an opening allowing access to the interior of the frame. A front surface may extend between the top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface, and a rear surface may extend between the top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface. Two side surfaces are attached between the front surface and the rear surface, each side surface having a solid side panel that is at least x-ray translucent. An anterior (front) plate is attached to the front surface of the support device, where the front plate includes clearance holes for receiving fasteners for holding the front plate in position. The top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface may include a serrated or other high friction surface for applying frictional forces between the load bearing surfaces and adjacent vertebrae.

Abstract: This present invention relates to interbody spinal implants and methods of using such implants. Certain embodiments of the present invention are particularly suitable for placement using an anterior surgical approach. Certain embodiments of the present invention include a body having a top surface, a bottom surface, opposing lateral sides, and opposing anterior and posterior portions. Interbody spinal implants, as now taught, further include roughened surface topography on at least a portion of its top surface and/or bottom surface. Preferred embodiments of the interbody spinal implant are substantially hollow and have a generally oval-shaped transverse cross-sectional area. Preferred embodiments of further include at least one aperture that extends the entire height of the implant body. This vertical aperture also defines a transverse rim having greater posterior thickness than anterior thickness. Certain embodiments also preferably include at least one aperture that extends the entire transverse length of the implant body.

Abstract: An intervertebral prosthetic disc (400) is disclosed and can be installed within an intervertebral space between an inferior vertebra and a superior vertebra. The intervertebral prosthetic disc includes a superior component (500) that can be configured to engage the superior vertebra and an inferior component (600) that can be configured to engage the inferior vertebra. A nucleus can be disposed between the superior component and the inferior component. The nucleus (700) can be configured to allow relative motion between the superior component and the inferior component. Further, the intervertebral prosthetic disc can include at least one nucleus containment feature (530,532,630) that can be configured to prevent the nucleus from migrating with respect to the superior component and the inferior component without interfering with the relative motion between the superior component and the inferior component in any direction.

Abstract: A method for implanting an articulating intervertebral disc prosthesis into an intervertebral disc space comprises surgically accessing the intervertebral disc space through an opening on a first lateral side of the intervertebral disc space and inserting a first half of the articulating intervertebral disc prosthesis through the opening and into the intervertebral disc space. The method further comprises inserting a second half of the articulating intervertebral disc prosthesis through the opening on the first lateral side of the intervertebral disc space and positioning the first half of the articulating intervertebral disc prosthesis on a second lateral side of the intervertebral disc space.
