摘要:
The present disclosure provides a device for delivering regulated hot therapy, cold therapy, and combinations of hot and cold therapy to an anatomical part. The device includes a housing having a slotted thermally conducive heat sink housing section and a planar housing section thermally isolated from each other, the heat sink housing section includes ventilation slots. The device includes a Peltier thermo module having a hot and cold side with the hot side being in thermal contact with the heat sink housing section and a cold side in contact with the planar housing section. A frameless fan is mounted in the heat sink housing section and located such that air is drawn into the slotted heat sink housing section and is forced out of the slotted housing section radially from the frameless fan. A control circuit is mounted in the housing and includes a temperature sensor for sensing a temperature of the heat sink. The control circuit is connected to the Peltier thermo module and the fan and is programmed to maintain a controlled temperature of the heat sink.

A system for local thermal treatment includes a solid-state heat pump, a controller, a power supply, a heat sink, a thermal conductor, and a thermal pack. The solid-state heat pump may increase or decrease the temperature of the thermal pack to a desired temperature for providing heat or cold treatment. The controller provides control of the solid-state heat pump and its associated components. The heat sink may include an air heat exchanger with fins and a fan, and a liquid heat exchanger with a coolant loop and pump. The coolant loop may allow the heat sink to be separated from the thermal pack for convenient use in constrained spaces. The thermal conductor and thermal pack may be flexible and may be configured specifically to conform to individual body parts. The thermal pack provides local thermal treatment to a subject's body for an extended duration.

Systems and methods for affecting metabolism, such as the treatment of metabolic syndrome are disclosed. A method for treating metabolic syndrome can include one or more of the steps including identifying a region of the patient comprising glabrous tissue; positioning the region of the patient comprising glabrous tissue into an enclosed chamber; adjusting the relative humidity of the enclosed chamber sufficient to create a physiologic metabolic effect; and activating a convection fan within the chamber to promote heat transfer from the glabrous tissue. The method need not involve altering the temperature within the enclosed chamber.

Systems and methods provide air or gas-based temperature-controlled medical devices. The systems and methods may be applied to provide therapy to a patient suffering orthopedic or other injuries. Air or other gas is temperature-controlled and adjusted to meet a patient's physical needs and delivered the patient therapy site through a temperature regulated system including a therapeutic orthopedic wrap. Feedback mechanisms allow the caregiver or the patient to adjust the temperature of the gas. Other fluids may also be used. The systems and methods permit use of electrotherapy for enhanced therapy and injury recovery.

An apparatus and method for performing warming therapy is described. In one exemplary embodiment, the apparatus includes a patient support assembly and a pump assembly coupled to the patient support assembly, for providing heated air to a patient. The pump assembly may include one or more heating elements coupled to the sidewalk thereof for providing heating of air flowing through the pump assembly.

Hypothermia significantly improves the rate of recovery of function following abdominal surgery-particularly radical prostatectomy. Prior to commencing surgery the tissues at and surrounding the site of the surgery are cooled by means of an endorectal cooling balloon inserted into the patient's rectum. The uninflated balloon is inserted and then inflated with cooling fluid which fluid is constantly circulated in and out to lower the temperature. Improved hypothermia can be achieved by bathing internal tissue with chilled water or buffer. Limitation of surgically induced damage can be demonstrated by the more rapid regain of continence in radical prostatectomy patients treated with hypothermia during surgery.

Apparatus and methods for cooling and/or heating selected regions within a body are described herein. An implantable system is used to cool or heat nerve bodies down to about 15° C to diminish nerve impulses. In one embodiment, the system can include an implantable unit containing a pumping mechanism and/or various control electronics. The system has a cooling element. The cooling element can be a Peltier junction or a catheter through which hot or cold fluid flows. The heated portion of the Peltier junction can be cooled by a liquid heat transfer medium which absorbs the heat from the junction and dissipates the heat elsewhere.

A sequential compression and temperature therapy blanket with a plurality of air chambers is disclosed. The air chambers are filled and released by a value assembly that may be separate from or integrated within the blanket. The temperature therapy blanket includes a fluid bladder for delivering hot and/or cold therapy to a patient. The temperature therapy blanket may also include an air bladder for providing compression.

A helmet (12) includes a thermoelectric heat pump (14) mounted onto a rear surface of the helmet shell (12) for delivering temperature conditioned air to the interior of the helmet shell. A multi-layer structure (48) on the helmet shell interior distributes conditioned air across the scalp and directly onto the face. An optional scoop (38) directs ambient air to the heat pump (14). Another version locates the heat pump (68, 84) remotely and conditioned air is transmitted to the helmet apparatus (70, 78) via a 10 flexible conduit (72, 85).
