Abstract:
A reusable device (10) for delivering a release of heat to an area such as a body portion. The device (10) comprises a flexible, fluid-tight container (12) holding a liquid (22) which releases heat upon crystallization such as sodium acetate tetrahydrate. A trigger (14) located within the container (12) initiates the crystallization of the liquid (22) to release the latent heat. The trigger (14) comprises a plurality of rigid objects (18) held within a receptacle (16) located within the container (12). The receptacle (16) is in fluid communication with the container (12) so that the plurality of rigid objects (18) are in contact with the liquid (22). The trigger initiates the crystallization of the liquid (22) when pressure is applied to the plurality of rigid objects (18) such as by squeezing the trigger (14) between one's fingers.
Abstract:
A heat pack includes a housing, a first phase change material (PCM) that is contained in the housing, and a thermal storage buffer that is contained in the housing. The thermal storage buffer includes a second PCM. An initiator is in operative contact with the first PCM. Activation of the initiator causes crystallization of the first PCM, and the first PCM cooperates with the thermal storage buffer to provide heat at a predetermined temperature range upon crystallization of the first PCM.
Abstract:

In an embodiment, the heat for warming the materials is provided by an activatable heating substance, such as a supercooled salt solution. In an embodiment, an apparatus maintains fluid at a preselected temperature for prolonged durations. In an embodiment, an apparatus may be sterilized for deployment in a sterile surgical field. In an embodiment, an apparatus may be reused. In an embodiment, an apparatus is adapted for easy pouring of contents.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a new and improved positioning device for stabilizing a subject on an operation table without a clinician's manual fitting. The inventive positioning device comprises a mattress/pad with a shell filled with a substance and a vacuum outlet on the sidewall of the shell. The invention also provides a warming device for preventing hypothermia of a subject on an operation table. The inventive warming device comprises a single cavity or an array of closed cuboid cavities contained in a shell and filled with a phase change material (PCM) in a form of liquid, and a triggering means for activating nucleation of the phase change material, which leads to an exothermic crystallization of the material to start the heat emission. The invention further provides a combination device that performs positioning and warming functions simultaneously.
Abstract:
The phase change initiator (11) is provided within a heat pack (10) consisting of substantially rigid walls and containing an exothermic phase change material (20). The initiator (11) includes a piston arrangement (12) which has slots (15) in its casing to provide fluid communication between the interior of the piston arrangement (12) and the phase change material (20) in the heat pack. Operation of the plunger (13) of the piston arrangement (12) acts to compress phase change material within the piston arrangement (12) to trigger initiation of a phase change which is then communicated to phase change material outside of the piston arrangement. The initiator (11) enables the use and activation of exothermic phase change material within a rigid casing.
Abstract:
The invention discloses a reusable heat pack comprising a soft sealed plastic bag containing a mixture of supercooled supersaturated recrystalizable solution of inorganic substance, alcohol, chemical compound additives, and means to trigger recrystallization of supercooled supersaturated recrystalizable solution of inorganic substance.
Abstract:
A trigger mechanism used for initiating a phase change in a variable liquid element by an activating material. The trigger mechanism also relates to a variable liquid element enclosed in a container with at least one perforation in the container, an activating material, and a movable barrier means for bringing the activation material into contact with the perforation.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a release switch for a supercooled liquid heater using a helically coiled spring, characterised in that the spring (1) is located and maintained in a flexible tube (2) whereof the length is greater than that of the spring.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an apparatus (10) for stimulating the human body, comprising a main part (12) with a chamber for a volume of liquid (14). A liquid (18) stored in said chamber (14) is liquefied by heating and thus is capable of storing latent heat energy. The liquid chamber (14) contains a crystallization trigger (20). When said trigger is actuated, the liquid (18) crystallizes, which releases the heat energy stored in the liquid (18) and appropriately heats the liquid chamber (14) and main part (12) of the apparatus.
