A flow of a liquid component (14) of biomaterial diffuses through the orifice and is introduced into a particulate component (12) of biomaterial. As such, the liquid component (14) of biomaterial hydrates the particulate component (12) of biomaterial.

A method, apparatus, and system for obtaining a solution from a solid product are disclosed. A solid product is housed in a dispenser. A liquid is introduced into the housing of the dispenser to interact with the solid product to form a solution. To control the concentration of the formed solution, the turbulence of the liquid introduced to the dispenser is controlled and adjusted either manually or on a real time basis to account for varying characteristics of either or both of the solid product and the liquid. The dispenser will adjust the turbulence based on the characteristics to maintain a formed solution within an acceptable range of concentration. The concentrated solution can then be discharged from the dispenser to an end use application.

A method of producing a cementitious mixture initially comprises thoroughly dry mixing the coarsest constituent of the mixture with the finest: this process is repeated until all of the sand, microsilica and cement has been added. In this manner a very even distribution of the different sized particles is achieved, since the voids between adjacent larger particles are filled with smaller particles and thus the produced concrete has a high strength. Following the dry mixing, water and superplasticiser is added. Less water than is conventionally used is required since the mixture is more densely packed. In order to further strengthen the mixture and to greatly enhance its energy absorption capacity, reinforcing fibres having different lengths may be added prior to adding the water and following mixing of the granular materials. The fibres are added by placing them on an apertured surface which is agitated to cause the fibres to fall through the apertures in a random orientation.

Methods and apparatus are set forth for preparing and delivering bone cement formed by combining a powdered polymer component and a liquid monomer component. The powdered polymer component is stored in an evacuated mixing chamber (102). The liquid monomer component (116) according to one specific aspect of the invention, is introduced into the mixing chamber by control means which causes the stored powder to be "substantially wet", i.e., all of the powdered polymer component is wet to at least some degree and is otherwise devoid of powder pockets. The control means (110), according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, stages the release of the liquid monomer into the vacuum packed powder chamber, under the effect of the vacuum, in a timed sequence using a plurality of monomer distribution channels (105, 299, 208). The distribution channels, which in a preferred embodiment of the invention include liquid component diffusion means, ensure the substantial wetting of the stored powder by delivering the liquid in parallel to different portions of the mixing chamber. The substantial wetting of the powder is designed to ultimately ensure a homogeneous bone cement mix.

The arrangement (1) comprises, on the one hand, an inner container (9) communicating with the atmosphere and with the mixing vessel (2), which container is so arranged as to enclose a glass ampoule (11) containing a liquid bone cement component (A) and, on the other hand, a device (13a) for opening the ampoule (11) so that its contents, under the effect of the partial vacuum inside the mixing vessel (2), can be sucked down into it. An outer container (10) encloses the inner container (9) at least partially and is so arranged as to communicate with the mixing vessel (2). Together with the inner container (9), the outer container (10) defines a space (15) filled with a certain quantity of a second bone cement component (B) in powder form. The inner container (9) is capable of displacement relative to the outer container (10) between a first position, in which sections of the inner container prevent communication between the mixing vessel (2) on the one hand and the atmosphere on the other hand, and a second position, in which communication between both the mixing vessel (2) and the atmosphere is open, so that the bone cement component (B) in powder form, under the effect of the partial vacuum inside the mixing vessel (2), can be sucked down into it. Feeding of the bone cement components (A, B) can take place in an arbitrary sequence.
