According to the invention, first a wobble movement is determined. The three-dimensional geometry of the work piece (4) is described. A virtual die (5) is allocated to the three-dimensional geometry of the work piece (4). The shape of said virtual die substantially corresponds to the negative geometry of the work piece (4). Said virtual die (5) is shaped to a geometry that describes the wobble die (9) in accordance with the parameters of the wobble movement. Said wobble die (9) is manufactured on the basis of the geometry obtained according to the preceding step.

The outer wheel is entirely formed in a cylindrical shape and is secured to one rotary shaft (1). The outer wheel further includes a recessed groove formed parallel with an axis for engaging a connector (7, 8) formed at one end of the other rotary shaft (2) inside. The outer wheel is manufactured by forming a pipe material (9) or a plate material to approximately complete shape by a press and finishing the recessed groove thereon in an accurate shape and size by a wiping machining work. The recessed groove is at least not cut. This outer wheel is adapted for a universal joint for connecting a vehicle driveshaft.

The invention relates to a method for completing outer joint elements (30, 40) that are formed without cutting and are used for homocinetic joints. The outer joint elements (30, 40) have a longitudinal axis and an internal recess (60, 70) that extends in the direction of the longitudinal axis and that is essentially free from an undercut in the direction of the longitudinal axis. Paths (31-33) which are provided with contact zones (34-39) for contacting roll bodies in a roll operation are configured in the internal recess (60, 70). The inventive method is characterised by the order of the steps: forming the outer joint element without cutting, surface-hardening the internal recess (60, 70) at least over the length of the contact zones (34-39) in order to produce a hardened boundary layer at least in the area of the contact zones (34-39) and above an unhardened matrix (61), calibrating the contact zones (34-39) to a radial measure and axial linearity by displacing the surface-hardened boundary layer in the area of the contact zones (34-39) within the unhardened matrix (61).

A tool for manufacture of such a hollow article comprise two sets of elements (A1, A2) disposed circumferentially between one another about the axis of the tool, the elements having portions (24, 27) which interfit to define a surface whose shape corresponds to that required in the article, the portions having formations (31, 32) which form the sets of grooves. The elements (A1, A2) are so shaped that the portions (24) of the first elements (A1) can be moved radially inwardly to disengage their formations (31) from the grooves formed thereby, after which the tool can be removed from a finished article by movement of the formations (32) of the second elements (A2) along the grooves formed thereby.
