There are provided compositions for the preservation of wood and related cellulosic and lignocellulosic materials. The wood preservative compositions of the present invention contain an organic preservative agent and an organic acid, and can be solubilized in an organic phase essentially free of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The organic acids may serve various purposes in the compositions of the present invention: (1) increased preservative solubility in the organic phase, (2) improved distribution gradient of the active preservative in treated wood, or (3) reduction of preservative leaching.

Stable emulsions and their use for preserving cellulosic materials such as timber and for applying toxicants. Stable emulsions are produced by simultaneously bringing together and emulsifying water and oil phases under conditions of ultra high shear, wherein the emulsion also contains at least one cationic, non-ionic and/or amphoteric emulsifying agent which functions without a chemically antagonistic reaction occurring. The invention also relates to an apparatus for producing emulsions which facilitates the emulsification process by providing an inlet enabling the hydrophobic and hydrophilic phases the minimum possible residence time in contact with one another prior to emulsification. The apparatus (1) has emulsifying or dispersing chamber (2) containing stators (3) and rotors (4), and an outlet (7) for emulsions. A heating or cooling jacket (5) having inlet and outlet ports (6) surrounds the chamber. Inlets (8) and (9) for the hydrophobic phase and hydrophilic phase, respectively, are provided.

Provided herein a wood preservative formulation comprising: a non- aqueous carrier; one or more anti-fungal preservative compounds; and one or more tertiary amine compounds. It is found that the tertiary amine component potentiates the efficacy of the fungicidal component. On the basis of several laboratory decay tests, it has been shown that C 14 -C 18 alkyldimethylamines potentiate anti-fungal activity of azoles in non-aqueous, solvent-based formulations without the addition of organic acids.

A method of treating a wood object against unwanted effects caused by fire or, correspondingly, micro-organisms or insects. The wood object is treated with a mixture which comprises at least one active substance, which active substance or active substances are mixed into a liquid intermediate substance before use. A liquid dispersion of an agent that increases the hydrophobicity of wood, such as an aqueous dispersion of alkyl ketene dimer or alkenyl diketene dimer, is added into this mixture. By treating the wood object with a mixture that is generated in this way, the active substance will remain in the wood, and it is possible to prevent or significantly delay rainwater flushing it out.

The invention pertains to a method of manufacturing a fire proof board from strands of wood, the method comprising the following steps in the given order: (a) providing strands of wood having a humidity between 5% and 25%, preferably be- tween 5% and 20%, even more preferably between 8% and 20%, (b) immersing the strands of wood in a watery solution of a flame retardant chemical composition, (c) separating the strands of wood from each other, (d) at least in part drying the strands of wood thereby providing dry impregnated strands of wood, (e) applying an adhesive to the strands of wood, and (f) forming a board of a predetermined shape from the strands..
