Abstract:
A method of treating wood including providing wood having an outer layer, the outer layer including an acetylated wood cell wall; and applying a supercritical fluid mixture to the outer layer to form a treated wood, in which the supercritical fluid mixture includes a silicate precursor dissolved in a supercritical fluid, and in which the silicate precursor is attached to the acetylated wood cell wall in the treated wood is described. A glass fortified wood composition having: an acetylated wood cell wall; and a silicate precursor including a long chain alkyl group, in which the long chain alkyl group of the silicate precursor is embedded into the acetylated wood cell wall. A kit for treating wood is described including a silicate precursor; a supercritical fluid; and a catalyst capable of facilitating the formation of Si-O-Si linkages. The silicate precursor may be dissolved in the supercritical fluid.
Abstract:
Aqueous silane formulations for treatment of an article or material such as wood, concrete, drywall, cotton fabric or wool fabric, and methods of treating the article or material with the formulation. The aqueous medium comprises an alkoxysilane or a combination of a halosilane a high concentration of a salt component. Optionally, the silane formulation may include a boron-containing component. Integrated processes for producing hydrophobic paper, gypsum, drywall, and concrete by pre-mixing components with alkoxysilane are also disclosed. Further disclosed are combinations of a silane component and a salt component, e.g., in a premixture or in a kit, co-pack or co-shipment. Novel treated products, including recreational equipment, are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a finished product from a lignocellulosic material such as a length of wood or chipboard, consists of impregnating the lignocellulosic material with an impregnating composition containing a thermosetting resin in a solvent, a styrene polymer in a solvent, optionally an anhydride in the solvent, optionally a mineral oil or a vegetable oil in a solvent, optionally a catalyst for the thermosetting resin, and optionally a hydrophobic agent. Thereafter, there is removed from the impregnated lignocellulosic material any excess of the impregnating composition and then there is removed the non-aqueous solvent or solvents. The product is then subjected to suitable conditions of temperature and pressure to polymerise the thermosetting resin to form the finished product.
Abstract:
The present application relates to a method for treating wood and wood-based materials for the purpose of improving dimensional stability and surface properties and also of avoiding cracking and an increase in long-term adhesiveness. More specifically, the invention, for the treatment of wood and wood-based materials, is directed to a method in which the wood or the wood-based material is subjected to a thermal treatment and the wood or the wood-based material is at least partly impregnated with a melamine-containing resin. Subsequently the wood or the wood-based material impregnated in this way is cured using hot steam at up to 125°C, preferably at up to 120°C. In a further aspect, the present invention encompasses the thermally treated and melamine-resin-impregnated and cured wood or wood-based material obtainable from the method of the invention. Lastly, the present invention provides the use of melamine-containing resin for impregnating wood and wood-based materials which are or which have been thermally modified, for increasing the hardness and reducing the dimensional change as a result of thermal modification. The material produced in accordance with the invention can be used as a substitute for teak wood.
Abstract:
A composition for modification of wood products is disclosed. The composition contains a prepolymer formed by the reaction of a polyfunctional hydrophilic polymer of high molecular weight and a crosslinking agent. The composition may also contain a prepolymer formed by the reaction of a sugar and a crosslinking agent. Modification of the wood product may result in one or more of: improved stiffness, strength, surface hardness, dimensional stability, water resistance, flame retardancy, and biological resistance.
Abstract:
A wood treating formulation is provided wherein the formulation is a mixture of a first solution containing styrene and a second solution containing furfuryl alcohol. A process for producing a wood treating formulation wherein the formulation is prepared by combining a first solution containing styrene and a second solution containing furfuryl alcohol is also provided.

Abstract:
The invention concerns a method for treating a lignocellulosic material provided with hydroxyl functions, so as to enhance preservation of said material and to improve its mechanical properties. Said method consists in impregnating the lignocellulosic material with an alkenyl succinic anhydride ester or a alkenyl succinic acid ester, having at least an esterified aliphatic chain provided at chain end with an ester function and in grafting the alkenyl succinic anhydride ester or the alkenyl succinic acid ester on the lignocellulosic material causing at least part of the anhydride or acid radicals of the alkenyl succinic anhydride ester or of the alkenyl succinic acid ester to be fixed on the hydroxyl functions of the lignocellulosic material. Such a method with improved efficacy (protection against fungi/insects) can be used for protecting wood; it prevents its deterioration and is non-polluting for man and environment.
