In accordance with the invention there is provided a compacted gypsum having a material density of less than 1800 kg/m3. The products of the invention can be made by a process for preparing a compacted gypsum product, which process comprises preparing a mixture comprising raw gypsum and an aggregate having a lower material density than said compacted pure gypsum, followed by compacting said mixture. The products of the present invention have a high mechanical strength that is sufficiently high for construction purposes, in particular for the construction of internal, non-loadbearing walls in buildings, while maintaining a low material density (high porosity).
