Abstract:
A tape drive comprising: first and second motors (3b, 4b); first and second spool supports (3a, 4a), respectively receiving first and second spools of tape (3, 4), the first spool support (3a) being driveable by the first motor (3b) and the second spool support (4a) being drivable by the second motor (4b); a sensor (5a) arranged to provide a signal indicative of linear movement of tape (2) between the tape spools along a predetermined tape path; a controller (9) arranged to control energization of said first and second motors (3b, 4b) for transport of the tape in at least one direction between the first and second spools of tape along the predetermined tape path; wherein the controller is arranged to generate data indicating the diameter of said first and second spools of tape based upon said signal provided by the sensor and data indicating rotation of each of said first and second spools.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A drive train for a printer is disclosed that provides and maintains a desired tension in the ribbon during transfer of the ribbon between a supply spool and a take-up spool. The drive train is configured to pre-tension the ribbon proximate the driven spool prior to driving the drive roller. During operation, the drive train provides and maintains the requisite tension in the ribbon proximate the driven spool with use of a slip-overdrive assembly. Additionally, the drive train induces a drag on the spool from which ribbon is being unwound with the use of a drag- overrun assembly.
Abstract:
Selectively printing full and fractional sized images with a donor ribbon. A first print order (90) and indicia are printed while the donor ribbon is advanced through the printer. Printing is performed using donor material on a first fraction of the patch set when the print order requests a fractional sized image, or on a full patch when the print order requests a full sized image. When a second print order requests a fractional sized image (98), a determination is made whether the second fraction of the patch set is available (100) for printing. An image based upon the second print order is printed using donor material from the second fraction of the patch set when it is available (102), or the donor ribbon is advanced to the next patch set (104) when it is determined that the second fraction of the patch set is not available.
