A method and system for operating restraint devices in a vehicle during a fast roll event or a slow roll event includes a lateral acceleration sensor and an angular rate sensor. When the angular rate and a vertical acceleration of the vehicle predict a vehicle rollover, the system integrates the lateral acceleration from the lateral acceleration sensor to obtain a roll rate velocity. When the lateral acceleration is greater than a fast lateral acceleration threshold and the roll rate velocity is greater than a fast roll rate velocity threshold, the system provides a fast roll event output. When the lateral acceleration is less than the fast lateral acceleration threshold and greater than a slow lateral acceleration threshold while the roll rate velocity is greater than a slow roll rate velocity threshold, the system provides a slow roll event output. The system operates restraint devices based on the roll event.

Multifunctional airbag triggering system (MATS), comprising the use of regular triggering systems commonly used to activate airbags, safety equipment regularly embedded in almost all vehicles with the aim of mitigating undesirable consequences that may happen when those vehicles are eventually involved in accidents of major severity such as crashes and overturning, circumstances that may cause the instant inflation of those airbags, also comprising the simultaneous triggering of an alert to all drivers and authorities operating in the same region regarding the occurrence of an sudden airbag deployment, those actions to be carried out through the use of the same original triggering means existing in the regular airbags however fitted according to the present patent application with additional broadcasting abilities to spread out an alert announcement that an unequivocal urgency is now in force somewhere in the vicinity aiming to allow all drivers for being properly prepared to avoid sequential collisions with the affected vehicle much before it can be seen, giving them therefore time enough for a safe and adequate deceleration, also helping the authorities located in the proximities of the accident scenery to rapidly respond to the needs of people eventually injured in the accident, being such a warning alert sent through a direct, exclusive and dedicated communication network instantly and directly created upon the accident between the damaged vehicle and all other drivers and authorities around, all of them engaged in a preventive communication through a dedicated broadcasting closed system.

The invention consists of various embodiments of a system that uses electromechanical means to alert a vehicle operator of an imminent vehicle roll-over and protect the operator in a roll-over event. The system uses an electronics control unit (ECU) that is able to detect the deflection angle of the vehicle's tilt with the horizontal. If this angle exceeds a certain amount, the operator is alerted of the increased risk of roll-over via haptic feedback whereby the ECU controls a seatbelt electromechanical system to create a haptic feedback alert to the operator. If the angle exceeds a second higher amount, the system braces the operator for a roll-over event by tightening the seatbelt, thereby better protecting the operator. The fact that the system is electromechanical, instead of pyrotechnical, makes the system reusable.

A disclosed safety system (12) for a vehicle (10) is disclosed and includes at least one sensor (16) for sensing movement and forces on the vehicle (10) indicative of an impact along a first sensing axis parallel with a longitudinal axis of the vehicle and a second sensing axis (A) angled relative to a lateral axis of the vehicle. An electronic control unit (14) is in communication with the at least one sensor (16) and derives movement and force along the different axes from the information obtained relative to movement and forces along the second sensing axis. The electronic control unit (14) uses the derived information to determine if a safety response is required based upon movement sensed by the at least one sensor (16) and the information derived from information relating to movement along the second sensing axis (A).
