Method for detecting accidents of vehicles comprises the following steps: • detecting an acceleration value (A) of a vehicle along at least one direction; and comparing it with a predefined acceleration threshold value (A th ); if the acceleration value (A) is bigger than or equal to the acceleration threshold value further- initializing a temporal variable t=0; calculating at least a speed value V(t)=V(t-Δt)+A* Δt from the acceleration value determining at least a speed variation value (ΔV) starting from the speed value (V(t)) and from at least a previous speed value (V(t-Δt w )) and comparing the speed variation value (ΔV) with at least a predefined speed threshold value (ΔV th ) and, if the speed variation value (ΔV) is bigger than or equal to the speed threshold value (ΔV th), signalling the detection of an accident on the vehicle; The method can be used to notify insurance companies of an accident.
