Abstract:
Abstract:
The invention relates to a coupling device which is used to connect a towing vehicle to a semi-trailer. A kingpin (20) is arranged on said trailer, and a tractor coupling on said towing vehicle, said tractor coupling having locking members for positive and rotatable grasping of substantially rotationally symmetrical surfaces (26, 27) of the kingpin (20). The surfaces (26, 27) are produced by a non-abrasive thermal coating (41, 42) and are formed by outer surfaces (45) of a thermally coated sleeve (30) mounted on the kingpin (20), said sleeve (30) being arranged with its inner surfaces (46) to be rotatable on the kingpin (20). The invention also proposes a method of modifying used coupling devices of the above type in an appropriate manner.
Abstract:
A fifth wheel cover (10) comprises a substantially sheet-like member having a circular portion (12) and a pair of tail portions (14) extending from one side of the circular portion (12) for covering the bearing plate and sloped flanges of the fifth wheel. A central kingpin opening (16) is provided between the tail portions (14). A cup portion (18) is provided at the end of each tail portion (14) for receiving the rear ends of the sloped flanges therein. At least one hook formation (20) is provided on the side of the circular portion (12) opposite the tail portions (14) for engaging with the rim of the fifth wheel to secure the cover (10) on the fifth wheel. The cover is integrally moulded from an antifriction synthetic plastic material.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A kingpin assembly comprises a housing having a recess located therein, a collar member operably coupled to the housing, and an integral single-piece kingpin having at least a portion located within the recess of the housing, wherein the housing and collar cooperate to rotationally secure the kingpin within the recess of the housing, and wherein the kingpin provides a sole rotational support for the kingpin with respect to the housing and the collar.
Abstract:
Self-lubricating plate for the fifth wheel of industrial vehicles, said plate being fabricated with plastic material comprised of polyethylene having a very high density and molecular weight, at least 4,500,000 and with a thickness equal to or smaller than 6 mm and which can be adapted perfectly to the surface of the fifth wheel owing to a fold which matches the ridge of the surface of the platform, the anchoring being effected by means of anchoring screws into orifices distributed throughout the plate, said srews having a flat head and the orifices being machined so as to form a recess or countersink to which is exerted the screw tightening pressure and wherein the planar head of said screws is concealed so as to avoid the protrusion of said screws.
Abstract:
The proposed traction coupling (10) comprises a saddle (11) in the surface (12) of which an anti-friction plaque (13) is embedded. The anti-friction plaque (13) contains a mixture of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyester resin. In the proposed process for manufacturing a traction coupling (10) of this type, fine-grained PTFE is mixed with polyester resin, the mixture is cast in a casting mould in the shape of the anti-friction plaque (13) and allowed to set, and the hardened anti-friction plaque (13) is then removed from the mould and secured (preferably glued) to the saddle (11).
Abstract:
A mechanism is provided for a fifth wheel to eliminate squirting and to provide automatic adjustment for slack in the locking system. The mechanism is able to keep the wedge (15) and jaw (16) of a fifth wheel locking mechanism and trailer king pin (Kp) within specified ranges of tolerance. The mechanism utilizes a self-adjusting or automatic ratchet lock system (27) which may be positioned to work in relation to the operating handle (30) or level arm (12) and utilizes the leverage forces available allowed by the design of the lever arm (12). The invention also provides for a fully retractable lock release pull handle (39) which may be retracted into the fifth wheel whether the locking mechanism is open or closed. The invention further incorporates electronic induction switches (34, 37) to indicate open and closed positions of the locking mechanism and to indicate whether the king pin (Kp) is properly seated in the locking mechanism. The design further incorporates replaceable strips of high impact resistant, low friction material (81, 82a, 82b) in the top plate (80) which eliminates the necessity of grease lubricant on the top surface.
Abstract:
A combination articulated vehicle damping system (10) for absorbing the kinetic energy of the trail vehicle (16) during a collision. Affixed to the trail vehicle (16) is a damping material retaining means (30) that holds a damping material (40). The back of the damping material retaining means (30) engages the rear end of the damping material (40). A slider frame (50) is slidably mounted in the damping material retaining means (30) and engages the damping material (40). A shearable fastening means (60) prevents the slider frame (50) from moving relative to the damping material retaining means (30) until subjected to a predetermined force. Secured to the slider frame (50) is the connector means (18) for coupling the lead vehicle to the trail vehicle (16). Once the combination articulated vehicle is subjected to a predetermined force, the shearable fastening means (60) breaks allowing the slider frame (50) to move and thereby deform the damping material (40). The deformation of the damping material (40) absorbs the kinetic energy of the trail vehicle (16).
Abstract:
In a semi-trailer coupling with a multi-part sliding segment liner (11) torsionally secured to a coupling plate (10), greater ease of operation and a long useful life are provided in that the sliding segment liner (11) consists of a friction material and the coefficient of friction at the sliding surface (12) of the sliding segment liner is set to 0.1 to 0.2.
