The innermost wrap (72) of pressure sensitive adhesive tape about the mandrel (55) is masked by an adhesive liner (73). That liner (73) is formed from one portion of a liner/tab strip (123) which had been applied to the tape previously, and prior to winding, the tape is severed, and the remainder of that liner/tab (76) forms an end tab on the outermost end (75) of the previously formed coreless tape roll (15). The circumferential tape supporting segment (234) of the mandrel (55) is supported on a rotatable shaft (210) and its surface portion (246) may be defined by a plurality of pliant stems (248) extending generally outwardly from the shaft (210) at approximately equal height. The circumferential tape supporting segment (234) may further include a tubular section of material (244) bearing the tape engaging surface portion (246), which may be rotatable about the shaft (210).

A method, a mandrel (10) and a device for removing coreless rolls (15) of a plastic film. The mandrel (10) comprises a tubular body having a plurality of radial holes (17), conformed with a chamber (16) for distributing pressurised air, in which a piston (22) suitable for being magnetically coupled with an external drive member (27) slides. When a roll (15) must be removed, pressurised air is supplied to the fore end of the mandrel (10), and escapes from all the holes (17) to expand the internal turns of the roll (15) which can be taken off without friction. As the roll (15) advances along the mandrel (10), the magnetically driven piston (22) progressively reduces the volume of the air chamber (16) preventing at the same time the air to escape from the holes (17) that progressively come to lie on the rear side of the mandrel (10), with consequent saving of compressed air.

The rewinding machine comprises: an insertion device (11) for sequentially inserting winding spindles (M) into a winding area; winding means (1, 3, 5) in said winding area, which wind predetermined quantities of web material onto said spindles; an extractor (25) for extracting said spindles from the rolls of web material formed on them; and a recirculation path (71) for returning the spindles extracted from said rolls toward said insertion device. The spindles are made in two portions which can be connected and disconnected; the extractor extracts each of said two portions from a corresponding end of the corresponding wound roll. Means are also provided for reconnecting said two portions to each other so that said spindles can be reinserted into said winding area.
