The present invention relates to sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) having a certain particle size distribution and its use in preparing poly(aryl ether ketone)s, especially PEEK. Poly(aryl ether ketone)s made using the described sodium carbonate also make up a part of the invention. The present invention relates also to a method for providing a sodium carbonate having a certain particle size distribution, which is especially well suited for the preparation of poly(aryl ether ketone)s.

There is provided a pack comprising a polymeric material having a melt viscosity (MV) in the range 0.05 to 0.12 kNsm -2 wherein said polymeric material is of a type which includes: (a) phenyl moieties; (b) carbonyl moieties; and (c) ether moieties. Preferably the polymeric material is selected from is polyetheretherketone and polyetherketone. Such low Mv materials may be injection moulded or extruded to produce thin walled components; or used as components of highly filled compositions.

The invention relates to a hydroxy-aromatic resin, prepared by bringing together and letting react a hydroxy-aromatic compound of formula (I) and an alkanol hemiacetal compound of formula (II). Formula (I) is: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 may be the same or may be different and are H, OH, a C 1 -C 20 alkyl group, or an oligomeric or polymeric system, whereby at least one of the set consisting of R 1 , R 3 , and R 5 is H. Formula (II) is: wherein R 6 is a C 1 -C 12 alkyl group, aryl group, aralkyl group or cycloalkyl group and wherein R 12 is H, a C 1 -C 12 alkyl group, aryl group, aralkyl group or cycloalkyl group. The invention further relates to use of the resin in adhesives, laminates, and coatings.

A resin useful in an adhesive for nylon is made by reaction of a phenol having a labile ring hydrogen (for example resorcinol) with a cyclic ketone for example cyclohexanone or a dialdehyde of at least 6 carbons. The obtained resin may be used in a 2 part adhesive by addition of curing agents or in a one part adhesive for nylon, wherein the resin cures by reaction with the amine of the nylon. Nylon gas pipes may be joined using the adhesives.
