A process of forming a porous polymer template material for use in selectively recovering a metal from a solution of the metal ions comprises polymerising a monomer admixed with a compound of the metal to be recovered, and then treating the polymer to remove the metal compound therefrom. A method of selectively recovering a metal from a solution containing the metal ions comprises contacting a polymer template material formed by a process according to any preceding claim with the solution containing the metal ions, and recovering the metal from the polymer. The invention also proves a polymeric material adapted to capture from a solution containing ions of plural metals a specific one of the metals.

Acid block anionic selective polymeric membranes are provided of the type having a woven or non- woven cloth reinforcing structure. The polymer of the membrane is prepared by the process comprising copolymerizing components I, II, and III wherein I is an ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic or aromatic tertiary or quaternary amine monomer. II is a cross-linking monomer, and III is vinylbenzyl chloride. The reaction is conducted in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator. Additionally, anionic exchange membranes of the type used in electrodialysis apparatus are disclosed and comprise a woven or nonwoven cloth that is impregnated with a copolymer comprising the reaction products of components I, II, and III.

The present invention relates to a polymer electrolyte membrane having high durability and improved proton conductivity which is formed by providing an ETFE polymer base film having a thickness of 10-30 μm and treating the same with low dose γ-ray irradiation, grafting the ETFE film with 4VP in the presence of n-propanol followed by acid doping of the resulting polymer with phosphoric acid. The invention also pertains to a novel method of operating a PEM fuel cell comprising the aforesaid membrane at a temperature ranging from 80-130°C.
