Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of producing coloured carrier particles (substrates), which comprises a) dispersing the carrier particles in a solution of a colorant or latent pigment, adding the carrier particles to a solution of a colorant or latent pigment, or adding a latent pigment or a colorant to a dispersion of the carrier particles, b) precipitating the colorant or latent pigment onto the carrier particles, and c) in the case of a latent pigment, subsequently converting it to the pigment, and to the coloured substrates obtainable by such a method, and also to the use thereof. Using the methods according to the invention it is possible to obtain colorations and coloured substrates that have surprisingly good light-fastness properties.

Abstract: The present invention includes a paint or coating composition comprising an organic pigment or dye complexed to the surface of a layered or fibrous inorganic clay. A wide variety of paint colors can be obtained by varying the pH during the preparation as well as by varying the synthesis conditions and changing particle size of the clay. The paint has unprecedented stability.

Abstract: The present invention provides anthraquinonyl and anthronyl dyes and dichroic light polarizers based on the dyes. The dichroic light polarizer includes two separate embodiments. In the first embodiment, the dye molecules are aggregated into particles oriented in a predetermined direction on the surface of a substrate to enable the dye to polarize light transmitted through the dye. In the other embodiment, the dye molecules are molecularly oriented in a non-periodic arrangement of different polarizing elements on the surface of a substrate. Each of the polarizing elements has a differing orientation of the polarization vector in the substrate plane and/or a different color. The dichroic light polarizer may contain one or more additional dye layers and may have a transparent layer intermediate between the dye layers.

Abstract: Polarizing coatings are formed from dyestuffs which provide a stable liquid crystalline phase in a wide range of concentrations, temperatures and pH-values. Particles formed by aggregates of the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in a predetermined direction to polarize light. The stability of the liquid crystalline state allows orienting the particles by mechanical forces such as a shearing force applied when the liquid crystal (10) is spread on a support surface (20) by a knife-like doctor (90) or a tension deformation force acting on the meniscus of the liquid crystal deposited between two surfaces (20, 30) as the surfaces are peeled off one another. As a result, the polarizing coatings are formed in some embodiments by simple methods. In some embodiments, the polarizing coatings have a high lightfastness, a high thermal stability, and a high dichroic ratio.
