The invention relates to a process for the treatment of a rock formation or cavity, comprising the step of injecting, into said rock formation or cavity, a water solution of a water-soluble thermo-thickening polymer, said thermo- thickening polymer being able to form a gel at a threshold temperature (T g ), an inner temperature (T int ) of the rock formation or cavity being equal or superior to said threshold temperature (T g ), said process being characterized in that the thermo-thickening polymer is a cellulose chain, partially etherified with C 1 -C 6 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups, or a polyacrylamide-based copolymer including N-isopropylacrylamide and/or N-vinylpyrrolidone groups. Such a process is advantageous for water shutoff in gas- or oilfields, or to solve to water channelling problems between injection wells and production wells.

A clay-containing mixture which comprises a powdered or ground smectite and/or a smectite-containing natural rock and 1-10 % by weight of a water-soluble polymer, or a blend which additionally comprises a diluting agent, both capable of forming a moisture-resitant gel, in which both the mixture and the blend are dry solids, the blend comprises as diluting agent more than 0.5 % by weight of one or more solid inert filler(s) with an average particle size higher than 0.05 mm, and both the mixture and the blend additionally comprise 0.8-6.0 % by weight of a powdered solid activating agent, all the weight percentages being calculated for the weight of the smectite. The invention relates also to the use of this blend/mixture.

The method includes drilling an injection hole into ground media to a depth at or below where contaminants are also present, drilling one or more extraction holes into the ground media in close proximity to the injection hole, injecting a reagent into the injection hole, treating the ground media for a time sufficient to have a chelating agent chelate a metal present in the ground media, reacting the chelated metal with a peroxide to produce hydroxide ions, contacting the reagent with the ground media to decrease its permeability, contacting contaminants in the ground media with the hydroxide ions to convert the contaminants to environmentally safe compounds, increasing the pressure of the reagent into the ground media, further reducing the permeability of the ground media to release trapped contaminants, and transferring contaminants from the ground media to above a surface of the ground media.
