Disclosed is a compound having high optical anisotropy and high compatibility with a polymer resin, which is represented by Formula 1 and necessarily has at least one meta substituent. Also, a resin composition including the compound and a polymer resin, and an optical member including the resin composition are disclosed. Since the compound represented by Formula 1 is an anisotropic compound having high compatibility with a polymer resin and high optical anisotropy, in the case of an optical member obtained by using a polymer resin composition including the compound represented by Formula 1, there is no phase separation, and it is possible to achieve a required optical characteristic with only a small amount thereof.

The present invention is directed to stable liquid-crystalline glasses which have a high Tg and are readily orientable. Such glasses are suitable for use in optical applications. The glasses according to the invention are obtained by reacting a diamine with mesogenic group-containing epoxides. The liquid-crystalline glasses according to the invention are especially suitable for use in the retardation layers of displays, digital data storage such as CDs, analog data storage, and polarisers.

An aromatic copoly(ester-sulfone) that contains one or more aromatic ester repeating units and one or more aromatic sulfonyl repeating units is provided. While a wide variety of aromatic ester repeating units may be employed, the polymer is nevertheless "low naphthenic" to the extent that it contains a minimal content of repeating units derived from naphthenic hydroxycarboxylic acids and naphthenic dicarboxylic acids. Despite the absence of a high level of conventional naphthenic acid repeating units, the present inventors have discovered that selective control over the type and relative concentration of the aromatic sulfonyl repeating units can lead to "low naphthenic" polymers that are not only soluble in certain solvents, but also capable of exhibiting good mechanical properties. Thus, the ability of the resulting polymer to be dissolved or dispersed in various solvents can be enhanced without sacrificing performance.
