摘要: Disclosed herein are methods and devices for detection of hospital acquired infections. Disclosed methods may be utilized for continuous in vivo monitoring of a potential infection site or for periodic in vitro monitoring of tissue or fluid from a patient and may be utilized to alert patients and/or health care providers to the presence of a pathogen at an early stage of infection. Disclosed methods utilize fluorophore pairs that optically interact with one another according to Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) or bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) mechanism. One member of the pair or a cofactor that interacts with an enzyme to form a member of the pair may be tethered to a device by a substrate that is specific for an enzyme expressed by a targeted pathogen. Upon interaction of the enzyme with the substrate, an optically detectable signal may be altered or initiated, detection of which may then provide information as to the existence of the pathogen at the site.

摘要: A fiber Bragg grating humidity sensor transducer comprises an optical fiber having preferably two gratings. One of the grating is sensitive to humidity whereas the other optional grating is sensitive to temperature. The sensor therefore allows for a temperature compensated humidity measurement. The humidity sensitive grating is coated with a specific polymer. When the specific polymer, which is sensitive to humidity, absorbs water vapor, it expands. The expansion of the polymer coating develops a transverse strain in the grating area of the optical fiber. A direct relation between the amount of strain and humidity percentage can be translated. The sensitivity, the accuracy and the response time of the sensor are enhanced by a hydrofluoric acid (HF) thinning or etching of the humidity sensitive grating. The measurement of the humidity sensor is based on optical signal interrogation technology.

摘要: A sensor system for the detection or measurement relating to a chemical environment, comprising an optical fibre, an optical source for launching light into the optical fibre, the sensor system being adapted to let a gas, e.g. hydrogen derived from said chemical environment, diffuse into the optical fibre. The gas thereby alters the optical properties of the optical fibre. The system comprises optical signal detection and signal analysing means adapted for determining changes in the optical properties of the optical fibre due to the in-diffusion of the said gas. The signal analysis means is adapted to derive from the determined changes at least one characteristic value representing the chemical environment.

摘要: Method and apparatus (10) for chemical and biochemical analyses which employ an energy transmissive core (11) and may employ one or more sheaths (12) which selectively absorb, react with, and/or filter an analyte or a product of an analyte. The core is transmissive to a chosen energy carrier and it has an inlet end and an outlet end. Between these ends it has an extended length. The passage of energy through the core is modified by reason of events which occur in one or more of the sheaths or in the case where no sheath is employed by reason of events which occur in an ambient fluid. The resulting modification of the transmitted energy is a measure of such events which in turn are a measure of the analyte. The energy may be any of several types of energy which can be transmitted through the core from end to end and which is susceptible to modification by reactions in the sheath or sheaths or ambient fluid. The energy may be electromagnetic, electrical or sonic. In the method aspect of the invention, a permeable core may be used which is bare, i.e. without a sheath, and exposed directly to an environment, e.g. the air or an industrial fluid.
