Abstract:
A method of rendering the appearance of a printed input digital image comprised of an array of pixels and wherein each pixel is assigned a digital value representing marking information, the method comprising defining each pixel as either a background pixel (214), interior pixel (216), or an edge pixel (212); and, reassigning the digital value of the edge pixels or interior pixels independently of one another (216 and 226). The rendering invention occurs post RIP.
Abstract:
A portable data processing system having print capabilities includes a portable computer having a housing, a print unit attached to the housing, and an ink container connected to the printhead of the print unit. The print unit includes a full page width ink jet printhead, a paper path, intake and output rollers, control circuitry, and electrical power and standard data protocol data connections with the portable computer. The use of a stationary printhead and a reduced clock rate allows full functionality of the print unit without sacrificing needed portability.
Abstract:
A print control system adapted to control a digital printer having a first machine-readable ink of a first colour and a second ink that is not machine readable at the same wavelength as said first ink and that is of substantially the same colour, said system being adapted to control said printer to print upon a document in said first ink a position -determining pattern readable by a digital pen to enable said pen to acquire data to enable a position of said pen in said pattern to be determined, and to print human discernable content that is not read by said pen superposed with said pattern using said second ink and not said first ink.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed toward a method and system for printing information onto a print media. In one aspect the present invention may be utilized by an on-line postage system to query one or more databases, containing set up data on one or more printer drivers, to determine set up data for a user's printer. The present invention may then be used to perform a printer configuration test to determine the set up data for the user's printer if the set up data is not contained in the databases. The present invention then stores the results of the printer configuration test in one or more of the database for use by subsequent users.

Abstract:
A printer (30) prints image data received from a personal computer (20). The printer stores a recognition program, which is installed for the printer driver of the personal computer. The personal computer executes the received recognition program to carry out recognition. Upon detecting a specific image, the personal computer instructs the printer to discontinue the printing operation. An image processing system is thus provided which prohibits the printer from producing printout if the personal computer connected with the printer detects a prohibited image.
Abstract:
Each copy of software (9) is assigned a unique identifying code pattern (27) which is printed on all documents (19) produced with that software (9) by a high resolution printer (17). The unique identifying code pattern (27) is a plurality of spaced apart marks having a size no greater than about 300 dpi, and is therefore, at best, barely noticeable to the human observer. The "invisible signature" is also reproduced on documents (19) made by unauthorized copies of software (9) which can therefore be traced. Preferably, the unique identifying code (27) is replicated multiple times (27>1 5 1 5 1 5
Abstract:
A system using a printer (13) with a fuser-heater (15) has control member (22) for turning off the fuser-heater (15) during times when no printing is required, while leaving the rest of the printing system operable. Time between print requests (twi) is monitored, and the fuser-heater (15) is turned off when a preset time (Ttrig) is reached without a print request. A next request turns the fuser-heater (15) back on again. Data is accepted at a reduced rate while a heater warms up.
Abstract:
A system for lowering the power output of a video display monitor (347, 447, 547) for a computer (111, 211) during periods of operator inactivity senses the presence or absence of horizontal synchronization (HSYNC) and vertical synchronization (VSYNC) signals, which are normally supplied by the host computer to synchronize data transfer to the video monitor with horizontal and vertical sweep circuitry. Time sensing means (229, 259) at the host senses inactivity, and suspends one or another of the HSYNC and VSYNC signals. Sync sensing and control means (451, 551) in the monitor senses the absence of one or both of the HSYNC and VSYNC signals, and controls power-using circuitry (445, 555) in the monitor in response. In an embodiment applicable to monitors having a microprocessor, the system may be incorporated entirely in software at the host and the monitor. In dumb monitors, the system requires add-in and/or add-on devices cooperating with software.
