The present invention relates to a high voltage DC power cable (1) comprising, - at least one multiwire conductor (2), - at least one insulation layer (3) encompassing the conductor and consisting of a plurality of permeable tapes wound around the conductor, - at least one non-permeable sheath (4) encompassing the insulated conductor, and - an impregnating compound substantially filling all interstices within the conductor, and the insulation system including all interstices between individual tape layers and all voids within the tape structure itself. The impregnating compound has a very steep slope of change of viscosity characteristics, - the viscosity being high - with a solid gel type structure - at temperatures equal to and below the maximum operating temperature of the cable (1) and being low - with a thin liquid type structure - at higher temperatures. The compound has a viscosity of 1-3 Pas - and above - in the temperature range equal to and below a maximum operating cable conductor temperature and a viscosity of 0.1-0.3 Pas - and below - in the temperature range above said cable conductor temperature plus some 5-25 K, and that the cable is adaptable to different ambient temperatures by adjusting the material combination of the insulation system. The invention also relates to a method for making the cable and to the impregnating compound.
