The apparatus incorporates a high energy laser and sheet clamping mechanism used to clamp each sheet blank in place between an associated electromagnet and ferromagnetic clamping shoes. The shoes are positioned above a corresponding electromagnet and are vertically movable theretowards on the activation of the electromagnet. In use, the sheets are held in place with the respective sheet blanks sandwiched between the associated electromagnets and shoes with the proximal edge portions of the sheets abutting. The high energy laser is movably provided in the apparatus to move an emitted laser beam along a predetermined path over the abutting proximal edge portions to perform welding operations.

A magnetic lifter includes at least one dipolar mobile pole (1) consisting of two ferromagnetic pole pieces (2, 3), joined through an elastic connection, and inserted between two fixed opposite polarities (5, 6) of an electromagnet (7) so as to be able to slide within a housing (8) formed therebetween. By using as mobile poles (1) dipoles which slide between two poles (5, 6) of opposite polarity the closure of the magnetic circuit occurs within the single mobile pole (1) whereby the contact losses are reduced to half and it is possible to lift even small- and medium-sized loads with the greatest ease. Moreover, thanks to the elastic connection between the two pole pieces (2, 3) which allows a change in their mutual distance, upon activation of the lifter the two pole pieces (2, 3) tend to move away from each other until they adhere through magnetic attraction each one to its own adjacent polarity, thus canceling the air gaps and the consequent leaks as well as the risks of sliding.

The electromagnet comprises a core (18), having three limbs 20.1, 20.2 and 20.3, each terminating in a pole face 22.1, 22.2 and 22.3, being formed by a plurality of ferromagnetic transformer laminations (26), stacked together and slideable with respect to each other in a direction to and from the pole faces. Lamination bias means (36), in the form of masses 38, 40.1 and 40.2 of resilient compressible material, defined quiescent pole faces from which individual laminations may depart by sliding when forced against a surface having ridges and/or grooves extending in the lamination planes, but exerts a restoring force on such laminations so displaced. The pole faces are thus able to conform to such an uneven surface before the electromagnet is energised and attach with improved flux coupling thereafter. The housing means is mounted on the body by way of attachment means (44) which biases the core to a position recessed with respect to the datum face. Bias override, provided by handle (50), permits the quiescent core pole pieces to be exposed for forcing into conformity with the ferromagnetic surface and when flux coupling is established the attachment bias urges the body (5) against the surface.

Gravitational forces can for example be generated by tilting the binding region (116) with a tilting unit(156).
