The pixel clusters and related compression format code are stored after compression in an available storage area of the frame memory (24) such that parts of said image data can be stored in said storage area in the first compression format and another part of said image data can be stored in said storage area in the second compression format. Said compression format code is used to perform a decision process allowing the display driver (20) to decide whether a first decompression format or a second decompression format is to be applied for decompression of said pixel cluster.

A high capacity compressed document image storage apparatus for color printing systems. The compressed document storage system is composed of the following major components: 1) An image creation system which can operate on a band-by-band basis. 2) An input memory which stores at least one band of the uncompressed page image. Two bands are preferred to allow double buffering, so that the RIP and compression stages can proceed simultaneously. 3) A page image compression system which can operate on a band-by-band basis. A new page image compression scheme which achieves high compression ratio and preserves high image quality is disclosed. 4) A mass storage device for storing compressed page images. 5) A real-time page image expansion system which expands the compressed page images at the rate required by the print engine. 6) An output memory which stores at least one band of the expanded page image. The recommended minimum is the number of lines from the first line of the print engine to the last line of the print engine, plus two bands. 7) An interface which reads data from the output memory and provides it at the correct timing to the print engine. An improvement to JPEG image compression when used with text or graphics overlays is also disclosed.

Picture elements in the areas having a specific color are extracted from an input picture, and luminance information representing monochromatic binary picture data and binary picture data specifying colored areas are stored on different planes respectively. On the plane for the luminance information, not only black picture elements but also other picture elements to be displayed in specific colors such as red, etc. are described inclusively. Picture elements, for example, of a red character, of a specific color to be displayed are extracted. The extracted picture elements of the specific color are recorded as "1s" on the plane of the specific color, e.g. an R-plane different from the plane for the luminance data. On the R-plane only picture elements having red color are recorded as "1s" and other picture elements are recorded as "Os". When outputting, picture elements whose contents on the plane for the luminance data are "1s" and whose contents on the R-plane are "Os" are displayed in black. Picture elements whose contents on the luminance data plane are "1s" and whose contents on the R-plane are "Os" are displayed in red.

Efficient representation of color digital pathology images (DPI) is described herein, which is accomplished by exploiting properties unique to such images. The method decomposes the data into constituent parts whose relative importance is able to be specified, allowing the data to be accurately represented with less bit precision, less spatial resolution or less spectral resolution. Two specific areas where the method is able to be utilized include: (1) more-efficient image compression; and (2) more efficient processing of the data. Efficient image compression is accomplished by assigning fewer bits to less-important colors. Efficient data processing is accomplished by processing only those colors, or combinations of colors, that are deemed important.

A method of storing colour pixel data provides the pixel data in YUV form with a first number of bits per colour component. The number of bits of the U and V components of each pixel data element are reduced to provide modified YUV data, wherein the reduction in the number of bits is carried out for each pixel without reference to other pixel data. Data are stored in a form which retains independence between each pixel. This enables processing of the data in the memory in a simple manner, for example enabling individual pixel data to be changed, and simplifying image processing such as rotation and mirroring. The luminance information Y is preserved, and only the chrominance information is compressed. This can enable high quality to be maintained in greyscale images and in text images, whilst also providing a loss in colour resolution to natural colour images which may not be perceived by a user.
