The present invention relates to a method for controlling the emission of polluting substances in a gaseous effluent produced by a combustion process comprising at least the step of putting said gaseous effluent, at a temperature within the range of 800°C - 1400°C, in contact with a sorbent composition in powder form comprising at least calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ), magnesium hydroxide ((MgOH) 2 ) and magnesium oxide (MgO), said sorbent having a specific surface. area (BET) greater than 20 m 2 /g. The present invention also relates to a sorbent composition in powder form, said sorbent thermally activated and a process for the preparation of said sorbent composition.

Apparatus for the production of carbon dioxide from limestone includes a nuclear reactor (10) for generating heat and a rotary kiln (12). The rotary kiln (12) has an inlet (28) for the introduction of limestone and an outlet (30) for the release of carbon dioxide. A heat transfer arrangement is provided for transferring heat from the nuclear reactor (10) to the interior of the rotary kiln (12). The heat transfer arrangement includes feed and return primary conduits (17,18) for passing a heat transfer fluid (14) through the nuclear reactor (10) so that heat may be extracted from the nuclear reactor (10) for transfer to the interior of the rotary kiln (12). Limestone in the rotary kiln (12) is thereby heated to a temperature sufficient for the release of carbon dioxide.

Die Vorrichtung ist weiterhin dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Querschnitt des Brennschachts zumindest im Verbindungsbereich mit dem Kühlschacht kleiner als der Querschnitt des Kühlschachts ausgebildet ist und der Brennschacht mit seinem unteren Ende offen in den Kühlschacht hineinragt, wobei der Brennschacht derart in den Kühlschacht mündet, dass sich im Betrieb ein Materialkegel mit dem zu behandelnden stückigen Gut im Kühlschacht und darüber ein materialfreier Ringraum ausbilden, wobei die Kühlgasabzugsleitung an den sich ausbildenden Ringraum angeschlossen ist und ein Regelorgan sowie eine mit dem Regelorgan in Verbindung stehende Steuereinrichtung zur Beeinflussung des Kühlabgaszugs über die Kühlgasabzugsleitung vorgesehen sind.

The chemical reducing agent or agents, generally chosen from ammonia or ammonia precursors, are introduced at a specific point in the rotary preheater kiln which has as an optimal temperature window to achieve the greatest reduction of NOx emissions.

Disclosed is an integrated process for producing a particulate product comprising a magnesium compound characterised in that the process comprises the following steps: a. producing a slurry of a particulate magnesium silicate; b. feeding said slurry to at least one first reactor in which it is continuously contacted with carbon dioxide, a salt of carbonic acid and optionally a chloride or nitrate salt; c. withdrawing from at least said first reactor a slurry comprising a mother liquor and particulate material; d. separating said particulate material from said mother liquor and recycling the mother liquor to either or both of steps (a) and (b); e. heating at least a part of said particulate material in a second reactor to generate (1) a particulate product comprising magnesium oxide and optionally silica and (2) carbon dioxide and f. recycling the carbon dioxide produced in step (e) to at least said first reactor. The cement binders produced represent an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland cement.

This invention describes the use of a fluidized bed reactor in the carbonation of a solid, inorganic and alkaline particulate material which contains alkaline metal salts. It also describes a method for treating cement kiln dust (CKD) containing alkaline metal salts. The treatment method comprises two steps: (a) a hydration step; and (b) a carbonation step, wherein the carbonation step is carried out in a fluidized bed reactor. In a preferred aspect of the present invention, the treated CKD is used as an aggregate in sulfur polymer concrete (SPC). Accordingly, the present invention also provides a method for producing SPC, which method comprises heating and mixing treated CKD of the present invention, elemental sulfur and modified sulfur to produce a mixture. The SPC can be used as a barrier to restrict permeation of matter, e.g. in a containment construction for storing matter such as hazardous waste.
