In particular it is applicable to removal of water-soluble compounds that cannot be readily treated using conventional adsorbents. The invention provides a process for treating water contaminated with pesticide or pharmaceutical residues which comprises contacting the contaminated water with a micro-porous, micro-mesoporous or micro-macro-porous carbon with very little heteroatom surface functionality that has been activated in carbon dioxide to minimise the introduction of surface oxygen functionality

The invention relates to a composite substance comprising particles of an oxide of a metal dispersed in a porous silica matrix. The composite substance may be made by preparing a solution comprising a soluble salt of the metal and a surfactant; adjusting the solution to a basic pH at which a hydroxide of the metal precipitates from the solution; preparing an aqueous suspension of the hydroxide of the metal, said suspension being at pH greater than 7; adding to the suspension, with agitation, an alkoxysilane, so as to form composites comprising the hydroxide of the metal at least partially coated with silica; and calcining these composites so as to produce the composite substance.

A particulate material includes an aluminous material and a silica dopant. The particulate material includes crystallite particles with a crystallite particle size of less than about 10 nm. The crystallite particles are stacked together to form primary particles with a primary particle size of less than about 500 nm. The primary particles are agglomerated together to form secondary particles with a secondary particle size of greater than about 1 µm. The particulate material has a mean pore diameter of not less than 8 nm.
