An apparatus for and a method of prepping a surface of a cylinder bore using a pulsed waterjet entails generating a signal having a frequency f using a signal generator, applying the signal to generate a pulsed waterjet through an exit orifice of a nozzle having an exit orifice diameter d and a length L. The pulsed waterjet prepares the surface to within a predetermined range of surface roughness. The surface roughness is determined by selecting operating parameters comprising a standoff distance (SD), a traverse velocity V TR of the nozzle, a water pressure P, a water flow rate Q, a length-to-diameter (L/d) ratio, the frequency f, and an amplitude A of the signal.

A method of controlling robot motion for small shape generation is provided. The method includes the steps of: a) providing a robot having a plurality of interconnected distal links with a respective plurality major axes and a respective plurality of minor axes, the robot having a controller for moving the robot to a starting position and along a path including a series of interpolated positions to be followed relative a workpiece; b) moving the robot to the starting position; c) determining a next interpolated position on the path, wherein the robot remains fixed in position about at least one of the major axes and a location and an approach vector of the next interpolated position can be achieved; and d) moving the robot to the next interpolated position. A method where the robot remains fixed in position about all major axes is also provided.

The invention relates to a vegetable cutting machine and cutting method obtained with said machine, such a those used in trimming and/or chopping of vegetables, the vegetables being moved forward longitudinally aligned on tracks of conveyor belts (3 and 5) of said machine. A group of cutting heads (1) using a high pressure water jet is disposed on the conveyor (3). Each track has its won cutting head (1). A linear TV camera (6) is placed in front of said group of cutting heads (1), said camera scanning the width and length of the vegetables and the separation between them. By means of the corresponding electronic devices, it commands the motors (1.8) of the cutting heads and a motor (3.1) pertaining to the conveyor (3) so that the high pressure water jet of each cutting head (1) trims the vegetable, if required, and cuts the vegetable into a whole number of equal pieces, the size of said pieces being the closest possible to a target size.

A method and apparatus for controlling the coherence of a high-pressure fluid jet directed toward a selected surface. In one embodiment, the coherence is controlled by manipulating a turbulence level of the fluid forming the fluid jet. The turbulence level can be manipulated upstream or downstream of a nozzle orifice through which the fluid passes. For example, in one embodiment, the fluid is a first fluid and a secondary fluid is entrained with the first fluid. The resulting fluid jet, which includes both the primary and secondary fluids, can be directed toward the selected surface so as to cut, mill, roughen, peen, or otherwise treat the selected surface. The characteristics of the secondary fluid can be selected to either increase or decrease the coherence of the fluid jet. In other embodiments, turbulence generators, such as inverted conical channels, upstream orifices, protrusions and other devices can be positioned upstream of the nozzle orifice to control the coherence of the resulting fluid jet.
