Abstract: A power converter for subsea use, for example for powering Remotely Operable Vehicles, comprises an electric motor (2) driving an electric generator (5) inside an external vessel (1) which may be a pressure vessel containing a gaseous atmosphere, for example. The motor and generator may be both AC machines, both DC machines, or combinations of these. Alternatively, an AC supply may be rectified to DC to power a DC motor. Equally, AC output of the generator can be rectified to provide a DC power output. Input electrical power to the motor is from an external source via a cable (3) while the output electrical power from the generator (5) passes through a cable to power an external device.
