The invention provides apparatus (410) suitable for use with a display unit (12). The apparatus (410) includes conveyor means which in one embodiment has a frame (448) with runners (450). An object (422) can be conveyed in a first direction from a first location (426) in the display unit (10) to a second location (428). Object (422) is suspended from runner (450) and movable between first location (426) and second location (428), using a pulley system activated via a handle (52). In another embodiment, the conveyor means may include a conveyor belt (24) driven by wheels (32) connected to a motor.

In one aspect, the present invention relates to a conveyor for intended use in a diverter system. The conveyor comprises a pair of spaced conveyor chains formed of links having a depending arm with an inwardly projecting guide tab. The links are secured together by connector rods creating opposed inward projections that support a first carrier rod positioned between the chains. Another aspect of the invention is an article carrier for capturing a first carrier rod, but releasably connecting with a second, adjacent carrier rod. Consequently, the carrier upon release from the second carrier rod can bodily move and pivot about the first carrier rod, such as in the event a portion of the carrier encounters an obstruction. The carrier may also include article-engaging projections.

The invention relates in general to a moving crank mechanism (10) that is particularly adapted for use in a conveyor system. A moving crank remains in a substantially parallel position with respect to a fixed reference plane as the crank member is driven by its offset opposed ends (12, 14) along an endless loop. In particular, the invention relates to a closed loop vertical lift unit adapted for use in an automated high-speed storage system. The vertical lift unit is adapted to be used as a primary storage location or as a lift for carrying objects in transit between levels in a storage system. The vertical lift unit includes a plurality of crank members (16) with generally rigidly mounted shelves (26) that are adapted to carry objects continuously and indefinitely as the shelves travel through a vertically oriented closed path.

A mineral conveyor is described comprising a plurality of plates joined together to provide a conveyor surface and a conveyor drive apparatus adapted to drive the plates comprising the conveyor surface around a closed-loop continuous path. At least one of the plurality of plates is a moveable plate adapted to move between a closed position where the conveyor surface is continuous and an open position where the conveyor surface is discontinuous. An apron plate feeder and a processing assembly incorporating such a mineral conveyor are described.

A scalable vertical conveyor cyclically carries planters (i.e. trays) in a closed path through a sub-floor dark zone and an above floor illuminated zone. A dark zone, formed below a floor, provides a dark region that simulates nighttime. The rate of travel simulates a growing day, such as, but not limited to a 24 hour growing day. One or more lighting, irrigation and fertigation elements are provided in the illuminated zone. Optionally, the portion of the conveyor in the dark and illuminated zones are adjustable.
