A process for producing a low-cost water-reactive metal sulfide material includes dissolving a substantially anhydrous alkali metal salt and a substantially anhydrous sulfide compound in a substantially anhydrous polar solvent, providing differential solubility for a substantially high solubility alkali metal sulfide and a substantially low solubility by-product, and forming a mixture of the high solubility alkali metal sulfide and the low solubility by-product; separating the low solubility by-product from the mixture to isolate the supernatant including the alkali metal sulfide, and separating the polar solvent from the alkali metal sulfide to produce the alkali metal sulfide. The present invention provides a scalable process for production of a high purity alkali metal sulfide that is essentially free of undesired by-products.

La presente invención se relaciona con el campo técnico de la óptica, ya que se refiere a composiciones de nanoparticulas de vidrio cerámico oxifluoradas con alta eficiencia de conversión hacia arriba (upconversion) contaminados con iones de tierras raras, los cuales son ano materiales luminiscentes obtenidas por medio de la técnica de fundido y enfriamiento rápido (melt-quenching). Las composiciones de la presente invención presentan facilidad en su fabricación en comparación con lo descrito en el estado de la técnica, ya que el tiempo de elaboración es reducido (menor a 3.0 horas) y las concentraciones del ion activo (lantánidos) son más bajas (hasta por un orden de magnitud), lo cual reduce el uso de materiales para obtener intensidad de emisiones comparables o superiores al NaYF4.

A family of quantum upconversion glass-ceramic nanocomposite pigments, useful for security and display applications are of particle-in-matrix construction. The embedded phase is a rare earth fluoride crystal, which is responsive for quantum upconversion, and is of nanometer size. The continuous or encapsulating phase is amorphous glass such as silica, to provide a barrier to the rare-earth fluoride crystals. The pigments are synthesized via a sol-gel process.

A glass composition having the general empirical formula given below, expressed in weight percent of the element: P: 16-24, F: 5-30, O: 20-40 and at least one of Na, K, Li or Al in an amount up to a total of 40 wt. % and optionally, up to 5 wt. % of boron and/or silica. The composition may be used for the treatment and/or prevention of dental caries by providing a slow fluoride releasing device that may be attached to a tooth to release fluoride into the saliva of an individual.

This invention relates to fluorescent photosensitive vitroceramics and the process for the production thereof. The fluorescent photosensitive vitroceramics according to the present invention employ fluorosilicate glass compositions including various photosensitizing metals and rare earths which impart photosensitive properties and fluorescent properties to the vitroceramic. After irradiation, the photosensitive agents control the precipitation of fine fluoride crystals which also contain rare earth ions. These rare earth ions can be made to fluoresce in a controlled manner. The inventive fluorescent photosensitive vitroceramics can be used in photographic applications, fluorescent displays and computer memories.

A dental porcelain composition, comprising a glassy matrix and rubidium leucite crystallites embedded therein, and having maturing temperatures in the range from about 650 DEG C to about 800 DEG C and CTEs in the range from about 13 to about 17, more preferably in the range from about 13.5 to about 16, and most preferably in the range from about 14 to about 16 x 10 / DEG C (measured from 25 DEG C to 400 DEG C). The tetragonal rubidium leucite is preferably both fine-grained (i.e., having average diameters of less than about 5 microns) and uniformly sized. Preferably, the average diameters are less than about 1 to about 2 microns.

A method for producing a machinable feldspathic porcelain comprising leucite is presented. Machinability is imparted to feldspathic porcelains by achieving homogeneous distribution of fine crystalline constituent comprised of at least one of the following leucite phases: potassium tetragonal leucite, rubidium leucite, cesium stabilized cubic leucite, rubidium stabilized cubic leucite, and pollucite. The porcelains produced in accordance with the present invention are readily machinable by using available diamond tooling techniques. Furthermore, the porcelains are especially useful for the fabrication of dental restorations using CAD/CAM technology.
