Abstract: A crosslinking material, the crosslinking material comprising the reaction product of a reaction mixture comprising: (ii) ≥70% by weight of a cyclic unsaturated acid anhydride and/or diacid derivative thereof by total solid weight of the monomers from which the crosslinking material is formed; (ii) optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and (iii) optionally, an alcohol, amine, thiol and/or water, wherein at least a portion of the cyclic unsaturated acid anhydride and/or diacid derivative thereof is reacted with the alcohol, amine, thiol and/or water, when present; and wherein the crosslinking material has an acid number of at least 100 mg KOH/g.

Abstract: An actinic radiation curable composition comprising a carboxylated acrylate, a urethane acrylate, a monomer, and a photoinitiator is disclosed herein, which both provides satisfactory adhesion to a substrate surface and may be effectively removed by caustic wash. Also provided is a method of printing, comprising applying an actinic radiation curable composition as disclosed herein onto a surface of a substrate, curing the applied composition, and applying an ink on the cured composition.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a multilayered article comprising a) a leather substrate; b) a basecoat layer superposing the leather substrate and c) a topcoat layer superposing the basecoat layer; wherein the basecoat layer comprises non-film-forming single phase crosslinked polymeric microspheres embedded in a first polymeric film, wherein the polymeric microspheres have a Tg of not greater than 10 ºC, and the first polymeric film has a Tg of less than 10 ºC; and wherein the topcoat layer comprises a second polymeric film. The article of the present invention provides a matte finished leather that exhibits resistance to cracking under accelerated flex testing conditions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of multiphase polymer particles comprising first polymer particles having a Tg of less than 30 ºC and second polymer particles having a Tg in the range of from 100 ºC to 110 ºC, wherein the second polymer particles are phase separated from and occluded within the first polymer particles; wherein the number average molecular weight (Mn) of the multiphase polymer particles is in the range of from 9,000 to 25,000 g/mole; and wherein the second polymer particles comprise at least 95 weight percent methyl methacrylate. The composition of the present invention is useful in a formulation that can be used to prepare a water-resistant blister free LASD coating with little or no surface defects.

Abstract: Methods and compositions for forming a coating layer on a substrate that include a) applying an aqueous coating composition to at least a portion of the substrate using a high transfer efficiency applicator that expels the coating composition; and b) curing the coating composition to form a cured coating layer. The aqueous coating composition includes an aqueous carrier, a film-forming resin having at least one crosslinking-functional group, and a co-reactive material having at least one functional group reactive with the crosslinking-functional group. The cured coating layer of the aqueous coating composition achieves 100 MEK double rubs as measured in accordance with ASTM D5402-19 (2019) after baking at 80°C for 30 minutes at coating thickness of 35 µm.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of multiphase occluded polymer particles comprising the steps of a) contacting, under emulsion polymerization conditions, first monomers and a chain transfer agent to form an aqueous dispersion of first polymer particles having a Tg in the range of from -30 ºC to 30 ºC; then b) contacting the aqueous dispersion of first polymer particles with a second monomer under emulsion polymerization conditions to form an aqueous dispersion of second polymer particles occluded within the first polymer particles, wherein the first monomers a phosphorus acid monomer or a salt thereof; and the second monomer comprises at least 90 weight percent methyl methacrylate. The aqueous dispersion of occluded polymer particles arising from the process of the present invention is useful in a formulation that can be used to prepare a water-resistant blister free LASD coating.

Abstract: The present invention relates to aqueous polymer dispersion of voided polymer particles and to a process for preparing such aqueous polymer dispersions. The present invention also relates to polymer particles, in particular powders of said polymer particles, which are obtained by drying a polymer dispersion. Further aspects of the present invention relate to the use of such voided polymer particles and the polymer dispersions as opacifiers and to paints containing such aqueous polymer dispersions. The voided polymer particles comprise: i) an alkali swellable polymer core of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers M(i) comprising polymerized acid monomers M(i.ac) in an amount sufficient for allowing the polymer core to swell at a pH of at least pH 7.5; ii) an intermediate polymer layer of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers M(ii); and iii) a polymer shell of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers M(iii) having a theoretical glass transition temperature according to Fox of at least 60°C. where the monomers M(iii) comprise at least 10% b.w., based on the total weight of the monomers M(iii), of one or more monomers M(iii.a) whose homopolymers have a glass transition temperature of at least 50°C, where the monomer M(iii.a) is selected from the group consisting of C5-C20-cycloalkyl esters of acrylic acid, C5-C20-cycloalkyl esters of methacrylic acid, C5-C20-cycloalkylmethyl esters of acrylic acid, C5-C20-cycloalkylmethyl esters of methacrylic acid, where cycloalkyl in the aforementioned monomers is mono-, bi- or tricyclic and may be unsubstituted or carry 1, 2, 3 or 4 methyl groups; C3-C20-heterocycloalkyl esters of acrylic acid, C3-C20-heterocycloalkyl esters of methacrylic acid, C3-C20-heterocycloalkylmethyl esters of acrylic acid, C3-C20- heterocycloalkylmethyl esters of methacrylic acid, where heterocycloalkyl in the aforementioned monomers has a total of 5 to 16 ring-forming atoms, where 1, 2 or 3 non-adjacent ring-forming atoms are oxygen atoms while the remainder of the ring-forming atoms are carbon atoms, and where heterocycloalkyl is mono-, bi- or tricyclic and may be unsubstituted or carry 1, 2, 3 or 4 methyl groups; di-C1-C2-alkyl esters of itaconic acid; and combinations thereof.

Abstract: A process for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion, wherein the process comprising free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium, in the presence of at least one vinyl polymer A, to obtain a polymer B comprising a vinyl polymer phase B1 with a glass transition temperature of from -20 to +15 °C and a vinyl polymer phase B2 with a glass transition temperature of from +50 to +110 °C, with the proviso that the difference in glass transition temperature between polymer B1 and polymer B2 is at least 40 °C, wherein the weight ratio of polymer B1 to polymer B2 is from 80:10 to 10:20, wherein the at least one polymer A is obtained by a process comprising: free-radically initiated bulk or solution polymerizing of: from 5 to 25 wt.% of at least one carboxylic acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer A1, and from 75 to 95 wt.% of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer A2 different than monomer A1, where the amounts are given relative to the total weight of monomers charged in the polymerization to prepare the vinyl polymer A, wherein the weight average molecular weight of the polymer A is lower than the weight average molecular weight of the polymer B, and wherein the weight ratio of polymer A to polymer B is from 10:90 to 40:60.
