Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for shutting down a two stroke crank case scavenged engine, the engine operating speed ranging form an idle speed to a maximum speed, said method comprising the steps of: a) activating a stop switch (33) of the engine (1); b) detecting a stop event from the activated stop switch (33); c) stopping the fuel supply to the engine in response to said stop event; d) adopting a stop ignition threshold being less or equal to a delay period (t2-t1), said delay period at idle speed being within the range of 100-1000 ms, and e) if the stop switch (33) is activated until the stop ignition threshold is reached after the detected stop event, then stopping the ignitions after the delay period (t2-t1) has elapsed from the detected stop event; or f) if the stop switch is deactivated before the stop ignition threshold has been reached after the detected stop event, then resuming fuel supply to the engine. The invention also relates to a two stroke crank case scavenged engine for implementing the method.
Abstract:
A power cutter comprising: a housing 2; a two stroke internal combustion engine 24 mounted within the housing 2; a throttle switch by which the engine can be accelerated when the engine is running; a support arm 7 mounted on the housing and which projects forward of the housing; a blade mounting mechanism 70,90, 86, 92 rotatably mounted on the end of the support arm and which is capable of being rotationally driven by the engine 24 when the engine is running; a carburettor 126 for providing aerated petrol for the engine; an air intake 314 for providing air for the carburettor; an air filtration mechanism 316 to filter the air drawn in from the air intake for the carburettor; a petrol tank 124 for providing petrol to the carburettor; and an exhaust 146 through which the exhaust gases generated by the operation of the engine are expelled from the engine; an engine controller which controls the operation of the engine; an oil tank 128 for providing lubricating oil for the engine; an oil pump 130 to pump lubricating oil from the oil tank to mix it with petrol; and a sensing system which determines whether sufficient lubricating oil is being provided for mixing with the petrol in accordance with predetermined parameters, wherein the sensing system provides an indication to the engine controller of when the lubricating oil is not being provided in accordance with the predetermined parameters, the engine controller placing the engine either in an idle mode or switching it off when the sensing system indicates that the lubricating oil is not being provided in accordance with the predetermined parameters
