Abstract: The present invention provides an ICC reader comprising: - a microcontroller configured to exchange data with an insertable ICC while the insertable ICC is inserted and powered, and with an end-user entity, - an ICC connector configured to allow the exchange of data between the microcontroller and the inserted ICC, and - an end-user entity interface connector configured to allow the exchange of data between the microcontroller and an end-user entity, wherein the ICC reader is characterized in that it further comprises an activatable 2-position built-in switch defining two states: i. a first state wherein the exchange of data between the microcontroller and the inserted ICC is allowed, and ii. a second state wherein the exchange of data between the microcontroller and the inserted ICC is interrupted emulating an ICC withdrawal.

That is, among other advantages of the configurations and operating methods disclosed herein, a laser scanner apparatus (10) experiences less variation in the optical power delivered to its photodetector (54) arrangement, in relation to detecting an object at different distances within a defined range.

The geometric features can include branches, angles between branches, and thicknesses of branches. The distortion can include alteration of a length of a branch of the dendrite, alteration of an angle between branches of the dendrite, alteration in a thickness of a branch of the dendrite, or a discontinuity in a branch of the dendrite. Obtaining the optical image comprises irradiating the dendrite with polarized or unpolarized light.

Abstract: A shimmer detection apparatus for detecting a shimmer within a chip card reader is provided. The shimmer detection apparatus comprises processing circuitry, memory, and a first sensor in electronic communication with the processing circuitry. The processing circuitry is operative to receive information representative of at least one electrical value of said first sensor. The memory comprises stored therein information representative of at least one predetermined electrical value. A multiplexer and hand-detection functionality is provided. Tampering -detection methods are also provided.

Abstract: A method for monitoring the loneliness state of a subject includes receiving proximity information for a plurality of user devices and then generating a loneliness decision for subjects who use the devices based on the proximity information. In one case, the proximity information may be projected onto a lower dimensional space, distance values corresponding to the proximity information may be compared, and the user devices may be ranked based on the comparison. A user may then be determined to be lonely based on the ranking of the user devices. In other cases, clustering techniques may be applied relative to one or more centroids. Distances may then be calculated and compared for purposes of generating a loneliness decision. In other cases, resource information may be taken into consideration with distance information for generating a loneliness decision.
