Abstract: Described are concepts, structures and techniques for passive mitigation of relativistic electrons produced in a tokamak plasma. These electrons may be referred to herein as "runaway" electrons (REs). In embodiments, a passive runaway electron mitigation coil (REMC) comprises an electrical conductor having a non-axisymmetric loop shape comprising a plurality of portions arranged along paths defined by the surface of a torus along a toroidal direction. In operation, the REMC is energized by a disruption-induced voltage, and the resulting magnetic field stochasticity causes electrons to be lost more rapidly than a RE beam can form. The REMC is configured for outboard side mounting within a vacuum vessel.

Abstract: A high temperature superconductor, HTS, field coil having turns comprising HTS material wound about an axis of the coil. The turns are separated from one another along a direction perpendicular to the axis by a layer of insulator material having a first resistivity at a temperature less than a generation temperature of the HTS material and a lower, second resistivity at a second temperature greater than the generation temperature of the HTS material. The HTS field coil further comprises one or more electrical conductor elements arranged to provide one or more electrically conductive pathways extending from one turn to an adjacent turn and through the layer of insulator material. In response to a voltage difference generated across the one or more electrically conductive pathways, electrical current is driven through the one or more electrical conductor elements to heat the layer of insulator material.

Abstract: A tokamak comprising a vacuum chamber, a toroidal field coil, and a solenoid. The solenoid is wound around the toroidal field coil within a central column region of the tokamak. The solenoid comprises an inner portion and two outer portions. The inner portion comprises windings extending axially for a first distance either side of the midpoint of the length of the solenoid. The outer portions, each comprise windings extending axially from an end of the inner portion. The inner portion has a number of turns per unit length which is greater than a number of turns per unit length of the outer portion.
