Abstract: A failure-resistant electrical ignition system cable (10) comprises first and second terminal contacts (28 and 30) for contacting a source of ignition pulses and contacting the predetermined destination of these pulses, respectively; a plurality of flexible ignition conductors (16 and 18) connected between the first and second terminal contacts, each of the ignition conductors being capable of electrically communicating the ignition pulses between the terminal contacts, each of the ignition conductors comprising an electrically-inert center (20), an elongated conductive wire (22) spirally and interstitially wound around the center for substantially the full length thereof, each of the ignition conductors then being twisted about each other so as to provide repeated electrical contacts of the conductive wire of each whereby electrical continuity between the terminal contacts may be maintained despite the occurrence of one or more electrical discontinuities; the outer exposed surfaces of the twisted ignition conductors being electrically insulated by a flexible insulating medium (26). The cable may optionnally include a concentric reenforcing braid (32) intermediate the ignition conductors and the outer surface of the ignition system cable.

Abstract: A laser diode pump source (26) is disclosed for pumping a gain medium (22) in a fiber optic amplifier (20). The high wavelength emission of the gain medium (22) is prevented from being transmitted back to the laser diode (26) which would otherwise cause severe degradation or catastrophic damage. In addition to the laser diode (26) for generating a pump wave, the pump source includes an optical fiber filter (28) preferably formed as a coil of single mode optical fiber (28). The coil (28) has a bend radius made sufficiently small such that the optical fiber filter (28) exhibits significant losses at the higher wavelength of the emission of the gain medium (22), but exhibits low insertion loss at the lower pump wavelength. The coil (28) allows the pump wave to pass through for pumping the gain medium (22), but substantially attenuates the back-transmitted emission generated by the gain medium (22).

Abstract: A flexible potentiometer (74) acts as a horn actuator in an automobile horn control system. In a preferred embodiment, the flexible potentiometer is adhered to a flexible substrate (78), which is in turn adhered to the inside surface of an airbag hub cover (70). The shape of the flexible potentiometer (74) is chosen so that the automobile horn will sound when the driver presses against particular portions of the outside of the hub cover (70). The resistance of the flexible potentiometer (74) changes as its shape changes as the user presses against the hub cover (70). A horn control circuit (96) responds to extremely rapid changes in the resistance of the flexible potentiometer (74), but not to more gradual changes caused by, for example, temperature changes. Additional flexible potentiometers may be used to control other functions such as cruise control.
