Techniques, methods, systems, apparatus, and articles of manufacture that can be used for optical amplification may be particularly, though not exclusively, applicable to optical amplification using thin single crystal rods (TSCRs). Such TSCRs may be particularly useful for use in Master Oscillator - Power Amplifier systems. Use of TSCRs in such systems presents an attractive alternative to using glass fibers for ultra-short pulsing lasers with output power levels exceeding 100 W. Such systems are desirable because virtually any engineering material can be processed by ultra-short pulses and the achieved processing quality using such systems generally meets stringent quality requirements.

The diode-laser pump module comprises a connector assembly 26 including a collimating lens (32) and produces a collimated beam (28B) of laser-radiation for pumping a gain-element (56) within the laser-enclosure. The beam of pump laser-radiation is focused into the gain-element by optics (54) located within the laser-enclosure. The diode-laser pump module can be replaced or exchanged without realigning optics located within the laser-enclosure by detaching and replacing the connector assembly from the laser enclosure.

The focus spot is directed to the outer surface of the optical fiber to create an optical damage zone (36) that includes at least one micro-crack necessary for performing the cleaving operation. One method for amplifying optical radiation includes an intermediate stage (220) having an intermediate active optical fiber (222), the intermediate active optical fiber and a final amplifying stage (230) including a final active optical fiber (232), and providing optical radiation to the input of the intermediate active optical fiber, wherein one or more final optical pump sources (235) are together in a low power state such that the optical radiation is substantially absorbed by the intermediate active optical fiber and such that substantially no optical radiation of the amplified wavelength is transmitted by the intermediate stage. The intermediate active optical fiber (222) can then be switched to a transmissive state by switching the final optical pump source(s) (235) to a high power state. A filter (260) between the intermediate stage (220) and the final amplifying stage (230) prevents ASE and pump light from the intermediate stage to reach the final amplifying stage.
