Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for directing radiant energy to permanently shadowed or occasionally shadowed regions such as on the floors of craters or in valleys in lunar polar regions to provide illumination, thermal power, electricity, communications, and other services. Embodiments of the systems include reflector elements to provide diffuse illumination, focused illumination, and thermal power, structures to support the reflectors and other elements, communications devices for varied signal types, and methods for installing the system. The structure can be compactly folded and delivered to be automatically installed.

Abstract: There is described a dispersive optical device (10) comprising an optically dispersive element (P) with a pair of angled surfaces (pA, pB), namely an upper surface (pA) and a lower surface (pB), positioned along the path of incident light (L) to cause refraction and dispersion of the incident light (L) entering the upper surface (pA) and exiting the lower surface (pB). The dispersive optical device (10) further comprises a mirror element (M) positioned under the lower surface (pB) and angled with respect to the lower surface (pB) to cause dispersed light emerging from the lower surface (pB) to be reflected back towards and through the optically dispersive element (P) to cause further refraction and dispersion of the dispersed light entering the lower surface (pB) and exiting the upper surface (pA). Such dispersive optical device (10) may in particular be used as optical concentrating device for solar energy harvesting.

Abstract: A method of applying an adhesive to a substrate to mitigate entrapment of air bubbles during a vacuum lamination process is described. The method comprises contacting the adhesive to a surface of the substrate and applying a periodic force to the adhesive along the longitudinal direction creating first regions having a first adhesion strength to the substrate and second regions having a second adhesion strength to the substrate, wherein the second adhesion strength is less than 90% of the first adhesion strength.
