Disclosed is a passivator and lubricant for gold, silver, and copper surfaces and corresponding alloy surfaces. Said passivator and lubricant comprises an aqueous emulsion with a linear fatty alcohol as an emulsifier, especially at least one C12-C14 fatty alcohol containing about 8 ethoxy units. Preferably, the concentration of the fatty alcohol amounts to about 25 to 35 g/l. An organic hydrophobic thiol compound, particularly hexadecanethiol and/or octadecanethiol, is dissolved in said aqueous emulsion as an inhibitor at a preferred concentration of about 6 to 12 g/l. In order to prepare said emulsion, the emulsifier is first dissolved in a certain amount of water. Said solution is then thoroughly mixed and is preferably heated to a temperature ranging from about 42 to 49°, whereupon the inhibitor is added. The resulting solution is then further mixed until a uniform milky emulsion is obtained. Silver and copper surfaces that are to be passivated are initially treated with said aqueous emulsion and are then rinsed with water, the temperatures of the emulsion and the water being selected so as to exceed the melting point of the inhibitor.

A firestain and tarnish-resistant ternary alloy of silver, copper and germanium contains from more than 93.5 wt% to 95.5 wt% Ag, from 0.5 to 3 wt% Ge and the remainder, apart from incidental ingredients (if any), impurities and grain refiner, copper. In order to further protect an article made from the alloy, it may be surface treated with an alkanethiol, alkyl thioglycollate, dialkyl sulphide or dialkyl disulphide.

An alkanethiol, alkyl thioglycollate, dialkyl sulfide or dialkyl disulfide may be used to surface treat of an alloy of silver containing an amount of germanium that is effective to reduce firestain and/or tarnishing. The treatment has been found to further reduce tarnishing of the alloy such that a sample can be supported close above a 20% solution of ammonium polysulphide for at least 30 minutes while retaining a generally untarnished appearance. The treatment may be carried out at the end of manufacturing a shaped article to give rise to an article that will preserve its untarnished appearance both during transit to a point of sale but during subsequent display for an extended period. The invention therefore also includes a method for manufacturing a tarnish-resistant silver article, which comprises the steps of forming a shaped article of an alloy of silver containing an amount of germanium that is effective to reduce firestain and/or tarnishing, surface treating the article with an alkanethiol, alkyl thioglycollate, dialkyl sulphide or dialkyl disulphide; and introducing the article into packaging. Also disclosed for use in treating an alloy of silver as aforesaid is a water-based composition comprising a treatment agent selected from an alkanethiol, alkyl thioglycollate, dialkyl sulfide or dialkyl disulfide and a mixture of an anionic surfactant and an amphoteric or nonionic surfactant in a concentration that is effective to solubilise the treatment agent.

The film (11) also inhibits corrosion at a defect area (18) in the film (11) when the substrate (12) is exposed in the presence of a corrosive environment. The film (11) includes dopants (26) which release from the film (11) when corrosion begins at a film defect. Therefore, the film not only inhibits corrosion where the film is undamaged, but also inhibits corrosion at the site of a defect in the film. Advantageously, the system does not lose its effectiveness over a given period of time if no defect occurs in the substrate (Fig. 1).
