Systems and methods for extending a linear range of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). A feedback layer is included in an SOA. The optical mode of the SOA is distributed between the feedback layer and the active region. As output optical power increases, the mode confinement of the active region increases and the mode is drawn from the feedback layer into the active region. The increase in the mode confinement offsets a loss of material gain such that the linear range of the SOA is extended. In one embodiment, the modal gain increases an higher output optical powers.

The method and apparatus for compensating a photo-detector allows both regulation and monitoring of the photo-detector to be performed with a common digital controller. The controller accepts input of monitored operational parameters including received signal strength and temperature. The controller provides as an output a bias control signal which regulates a positive the positive or negative side bias voltage power supply for the photo-detector. The controller maintains the bias voltage to the photo-detector at levels which optimize the gain and signal-to-noise ratios for the photo-detector thereby facilitating the decoding of the received signal over a broad range of signal strengths and temperatures. The controller includes a corresponding digital signal strength and temperature compensators the outputs of which summed with a summer to provide the bias control signal. The digital signal strength compensator also provides as an output a monitor signal a level of which corresponds to the actual signal strength received by the photo-detector after compensation for the variable gain of the photo-detector resulting from the bias voltage level. A transceiver as well as methods and means for monitoring a photo-detector are also disclosed.

A method and apparatus for multiplexing/de-multiplexing optical signals is disclosed. The method and apparatus are applicable to a range of optical multiplexing techniques including, but not limited to: wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and frequency division multiple accessing (FDMA). The disclosed devices do not require active components. The disclosed devices may be implemented with fiber or fiberless optical communication systems including telecommunications systems. The devices may be used on their own or as part of a larger system such as a multi-stage mux/demux, an optical switch, or router. In an embodiment of the invention, the devices are passively thermally stabilized with the result that their tuning is substantially invariant across a wide temperature range. The optical device includes a linear polarizer, wave plates and a beam displacer/combiner. The wave plates optically couple to the linear polarizer. The wave plates rotate both odd and even channel components of an optical beam between a linear and an orthogonal relationship depending on the propagation direction. Each wave plate is of a selected length and index of refraction which together determine a free spectral range which correspond to a spacing between adjacent gridlines of the selected wavelength grid. Each of the wave plates is tuned to even symmetry with the selected wavelength grid. The beam displacer/combiner displaces and combines orthogonally polarized odd and even channel components of an optical beam depending on a propagation direction.

At a first temperature, a first bias current at which the laser generates optical signals at a first level is determined. If the second temperature is greater than the higher end-point temperature of the predefined range, the second predefined level is defined to be less than the first predefined level. The second data stream may contain maintenance data reflecting an operational state of the transmitter.
