The invention relates to a solid-liquid filtration cloth comprising a base fabric woven from polymer yarns (1, 2). After the weaving, the base fabric has been treated by a polymer material, which has better electric conductivity than the polymer yarns of the base fabric. The polymer treatment is carried out by means of a polyaniline solution or a polypyrrole solution, for instance. After the polymer treatment, at least the yarns on the surface of the base fabric comprise a coating (3) of an electrically conductive polymer.

The invention concerns a method comprising steps which consist in: producing a preform of a component to be manufactured in a coherent carbon precursor fibre texture, using a manufacturing process such as knitting, two-dimensional texture stitching or braiding; and in a carbonizing and activating treatment to obtain directly the part in the desired form of activated carbon fibres, the preform being dimensioned to take into account shrinkage during the carbonizing and activating treatment. The method is useful in particular for producing parts of garments for protection against attacks such as nuclear, bacteriological or chemical attacks.

The invention concerns a filter cloth for liquid filtration made from pile Polycloth, the pile threads (21) of which are on the flow side and lie flat against the backing fabric during filtration, creating a deep-bed filter. During the backwash they are raised by the reverse flow and the dirt particles are released. Backwash is preferably initiated by a movable suction device (13) on the front of the filter, which at the same time has a mechanical effect on the pile threads, making them stand upright during the backwash and lie flat afterwards.

Preferably configured in ridge and recess irregularity, the adsorbent article of the invention provides adsorption of malodor components in air and also exhibits a dust collecting function. It comprises a woven sheet having a coarse three dimensional structure whose areas of the sheet surface as well as internal fiber structure which are allowed to come into contact with incoming outer air are provided with a binder layer made of a latex or emulsion or a non-solvent adhesive, to which binder layer activated carbon particles are adhered which are partially exposed. The process of adhereing activated carbon particles is conveniently performed by a fluidizing bed. The inventive sheet form fabric incorporates the particles with a high void ratio and uniformity and thereby exhibits a high adsorptive rate and capacity, and exceedingly low pressure loss with such result that it is applicable regardless of high or low air wind rate. Preferable use of the adsorbent article of the invention is in a filter element of an air-conditioner for cars.

An intermediate layer of metal particle peaks and ceramic filled troughs is thus provided which has high tortuosity. The resistance to flow at the metal/ceramic interface can be increased by electrodeposition of metal there.

A device for purifying a workstream of contaminants and method of making and using. One device is made of an inorganic monolithic porous particulate filter and a continuous uninterrupted coating of activated carbon impregnated into the pores of the filter. Preferably the filter has inlet and outlet faces, and a multiplicity of cells separated by porous walls and extending longitudinally and mutually parallel therethrough from inlet to outlet end, a portion of the total number of cells being plugged at the inlet end face, and the remaining portion of the total number of cells being plugged at the outlet end face of the device. Another device can be made entirely of activated carbon having the multicellular structure. A workstream containing contaminants is passed through the device to cause retention of the contaminants. The device can have electrically conducting means for conducting electric current therethrough for removal of the contaminants and regeneration of the device.

An improved composite fiber of fiberglass and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is provided. The composite fiber comprises a coherent strand of commingled filaments of fiberglass and PTFE which is far more resistant to flex, abrasion, and chemical attack than previous fiberglass fibers. Preferably filaments of expanded PTFE tow yarn and filaments of PTFE are combined through a process of air-jet texturing. The fibers of the present invention have a wide range of possible uses, including being formed into a fabric and employed as filter media.

The apparatus comprises an elongate die 11 having a plurality of orifices 32 formed in a die tip 30 thereof, an extruder 10 for extruding molten thermoplastic resin through the die tip orifices 32 to form a plurality of side-by-side fibers, and air lines 17 for blowing converging air streams on the fiber extruded from the die tip orifices 32 to form a fiber-air stream 40. A pair of elongate and horizontal electrodes 42, 43 is spaced from the outlets of the die tip orifices 32, one electrode 42 being above the fiber-air stream 40 and the other electrode 43 being below the fiber-air stream 40. A pair of emitters 44 is secured to the die, and protrudes outwardly therefrom, one emitter 44 being positioned above the die tip 30 and the other emitter 44 being positioned below the die tip 30. Each emitter 44 has an outer end 45 in close proximity to the die tip orifice outlets. Furthermore a voltage source is provided for applying a high voltage to the electrodes 42, 43 to establish an electrostatic field between the electrodes 42, 43 and the emitters 44. A filter of exceptional filtration efficiency may be produced by such apparatus.
